Boats finally done and we are fishing!
We got the new boat to Ocean City just in time to fish the Ocean City Tuna Tournament. After a late night rigging session and few adjustments we felt like we were almost ready to fish in a tournament. We had a great time fishing with Frank Sherman and his guests. Our first day, we started out trying to catch a stringer of yellow fins, but all we got was white marlin bites. Congratulations to Tyler for catching not only his first white marlin, but the first white marlin caught aboard the Billfisher. As much as we would have liked to stay offshore, we decided to run inshore to The Elephant's Trunk to try for a bluefin. Almost immediately we hooked a nice fish which we ended up boxing. The fish ended up being a 69" fish that weighed 164lbs . Although we didn't win the tournament, we won a daily for the heaviest fish that day. Overall we had a great tuna tourney, we caught a handfull of nice fish, all on circle hooks by the way, and even had a couple of bonus white marlin encounters.
As soon as we finished cleaning the boat after the tuna tournament, we immediately changed our tackle and prepared for marlin fishing the next day. We headed for 1300 fathoms behind the Wimington and even though it was choppy we were able to maintain a speed of 32 knots, which is only about 1650rpms! About a half hour into fishing, we raised our first white marlin of the day, however the fish was very lazy and did not cooperate. It was nice to see a fish so soon after putting the baits in the water. 30 minutes after that fish came another white marlin, and this one was hungry. The fish came right off the dredge and crushed the flatline which always makes for an exciting bite. Throughout the day we had a slow pick on nice size gaffer dolphins. As we were reeling in the lines to call it a day, we had another white marlin bite. All in all it was a fantastic day...first day fishing - 3 white marlin bites. We could not be happier with the way the boat performs and fishes....she really is an incredible machine! We are really looking forward to getting out and white marlin fishing for the rest of the summer on the new rig. Last edited by JonnyD; 07-16-2008 at 10:57 AM. |

Beautiful boat jonny. Nice to see some flags flying as well. Good luck this summer with the new boat.
For anyone who hasn't noticed Billfisher is a sponsor of sportfishermen.com and their crew is one of the top boats that follow the billfish up and down the coast. If your looking to fish for marlin or tuna give these guys a call. You will not only have an incredible time but also learn quite a bit on the art of circle hook fishing.
