    Bimini Twist Vs Australian Braid

I can tie a Bimini in less then a minute in a half, for me it take 5 minutes plus to tie and Australian Braid.

What I want to know is at the dock before a big tournament what do the best crews tie and why?(for a double line)

There is a reason why those guys down under take the time to tie this knot I want to know why?

For me the Aussie braid doesn't bruise the line like a Bimini does with all the twisting and rolling, having said that i have had neither knot fail.
The secret is to learn to tie any knot perfectly.

I timed myself on both knots a few weeks ago. A 30-turn short (3 feet) bimini in 30 lb test took me just over two minutes - length already determined, clock started from the point I began the first twist and ended when I trimmed off the tag end. For a 35-plait (I think) braid in 30 lb test, length pre-selected (length is almost immaterial for this knot) - time started from the point I made the first plait - it took just under three minutes. Not a great deal of difference in terms of time, although both knots take longer on heavy tackle. One thing I did find - that clock sure goes quickly when you're working against it!

Part of the reason the Australians and Kiwis use it is because that's the knot they learn to start out with, they do it fast and well, and it's a good solid knot so they see no reason to change.

    Test 'em

Tie an Aussie Braid in one end of a piece of 100lb Sufix (or whatever) and tie a nice Bimini twist in the other end. Put one loop over a rod holder on the tower leg and the other on your mop handle and tell me which one breaks first. Every time I've tried it the Aussie breaks in the knot and the Bimini holds.
The Bimini is 100% if tied correctly and the Aussie always breaks in the knot. Finish the Bimini with floss instead of half hitches and eliminate the "bump"

Unless you've experienced a lot of failures with the Bimini why worry about it. Personally I've never had one fail.

I've been tying Bimini's since I first learned how to do them back when I was a kid (that was a helluva long time ago), so they are easy and fast for me. I've never had one fail that I can recall, at least.

Fastest men I've ever seen at tying them were Key West guides Jose Wejebe, Bob Trosset, and Kenny "The Wharf Dwarf" Harris. Those guys are FAST!

That being said, I no longer use a lot of doubles. I prefer good spliced loops double cat's pawed where possible. I really like the aspect that you can prepare a bunch of leaders in advance and simply un-cat's paw the one you want to replace and cat's paw the new one on. I have a lot of confidence in the leaders sizes and rigging that I do, so this is good enough for me and I get along fine without the double line.

    I am also a wind-on leader fanatic.

I use in only a bimini up to 80lb and the Aussie braid with my big stuff. I have never had either one break. Im not sure why I do it. I tie a loose Bimini wich has the same stretch purpose as a Aussie braid.
