Nice looking rods. Never messed with the abolonge but they sure do look great.
How are you doing the build up going from base wrap into the fore grip? Just using the glass to make the build up, or thread and then glassing over it???? It really looks good. i personally always have used the little rubber stops that go on top of the fore grip, but that looks fantastic. I am working on my own stand up rod. (Its going to be a sister to a death stick I made back in 2003.) I have had it in my closet forever, and only today pulled it out to work on it, and saw this post. I am at the stage where I need to start the base wraps. The other one has all reverse chevrons (under each guide) with gold base and silver and black chevrons. I am trying to decide if I made an exact copy, or make it on reverse... silver base wrap, and gold black chevrons.

Jared-
These three rods were my first attempt at that foregrip treatment, and I have to say it was really easy. Once I completed the base wraps and had a coat of flex coat on it, I used a file to shape the eva into a taper. I cleaned it with denatured alcohol, and then used some tape to make a clean edge for the epoxy. With the rod turning (the same as when you apply flex coat), I applied a coat of 5 minute epoxy and let it dry. Then I just used black D thread and wrapped up and onto the taper. I added a highlight color, and then flex coated over the whole deal. It took 2-3 layers of flex coat before it was where I wanted it, but that was it. One note- I'm not sure why, but with each of my rods there was one area that I would get a bubble that formed. It was a different spot on each rod, but every time I would put a layer of flex coat on it would come back. Not sure why that happened, but you'll want to look out for that so you don't get a big bubble in the middle of the deal. Good luck, and let us know how you do! Shoe |

Shoe,
Was the bubble coming from the epoxy ramp section on each rod? How smooth was the 5 Min Epoxy? One thing I saw was if I didn't apply the flexcote exactly perpendicular to the Wraps, I got bubbles in the groove between the thread. After the first (or possibly second coat) you can go back to your normal application method

Yeah, it was on the ramp section. The first rod I did the first coat with regular long drying epoxy and it happened there, then it happened with both of the others using 5 minute epoxy. I didn't apply the flex coat perpendicular to the threads, so maybe that was my problem. I'll have to try that next time. Thanks for the tip!
