Hey guys, Dan has been nice enough to be willing to teach me and help me build my two rods with him this week. Although, I知 sure I知 going to have to cough out some info during the fishing season in trade, that痴 ok with me. What I was wondering was, what would be a good looking wrap? Iv been think of doing something with a red and green thread, but I知 not locked down to that, so any ideas would be cool. Remember these are the first two rods I have ever built but I will have Dan with me to help. Thanks.

Captkev, ya can go to various rodbuilding-sites and ck their photo-gallery (ie rodbuilding.org) Most of my wrap-design ideas come from other builders.

(as long as they are not too fancy )

Or ck Paul's website (jpr rods) He's got some nice wraps and colorcombo's

Gut fish thanks for the tip. That makes a lot of sense. That would help to keep the spines lined up too. I'll have to try that next time.

Thread colors a personal choice, you may want to match your boat or reel or favorite team colors. On large trolling rods I like to use size A thread for an underwrap, with two coats of CP. The CP helps a great deal with removing the wrap if you need to make repairs latter on and all so with air bubbles on the finish coat.Than a double wrap with size D & C thread, all though you can getaway with a single wrap of size D thread.

shoefish, will you be doing the Abalone butt wrap on the rods ???? I did a MOP butt wrap and trim bands under the guides on a pink rod for Mrs. gut and it looks sweet. I'll try to post the pics again tomorrow.

Yeah, I am going to try the abalone on these. I'm really looking forward to it. I have a "practice" piece of shell that I'm going to experiment with this week and then if things go well I'll be trying to get after it this weekend.

Keep this rolling shoe -- I've always wanted to try building my own, but have never gotten to it. Maybe this will be my kick in the butt.

I don't like using CP, I use all NCP thread and coat the underwraps with a lite coat of finish before wrapping the guides. I flame all my sticks to get the bubbles out of the finish and have had some funky reactions with the CP when I first started building rods ......

Well I put a little more time in tonight. With the ferrules all completed and cleaned up, it was time for the fore-grips. For these rods we're going to be doing EVA grips. They come pre-shaped, though you can customize them if you want. For this project, we just went with the pre-shaped 14" grips.

You will notice that as you slide the grips down the blank, that they don't go nearly to the butt. This is normal, and will make for a tighter fit once completed.

Notice that the grip stops about 8-10" above the ferrule

To prep, and make sure that you don't epoxy the threads (don't ask me how I know this ), I wrap masking tape around the base of the ferrule.

Next, slide the fore-grip down and mark the lowest point with a permanent marker (this will be hidden under the grip, so it will never be seen). Next mix up some epoxy, and add it liberally above that line.

Next slide the grip down the blank, and work it around to make sure that the epoxy gets evenly distributed throughout the EVA. Then, squeeze the top of the grip (like you're making an "okay" sign)

[here is a view from the side]

[here is a view from above]

Place the butt end on the ground, and push down the blank

Be sure that when you get it close to the ferrule, that you then make sure to "stretch" the grip back to the original length. If you don't do this, there will be a gap in the middle, and your grip won't be tight (picture pressing either side of a chinese finger cuff towards the middle and you'll get the picture)

Here is what they should look like when you're done.

Then get yourself some rags and denatured alcohol and wipe off the excess epoxy from all surfaces.

Once these get dry they will be ready to wrap! That's when the fun begins.
