Roller Guide Question

Okay, so this is something that I've been trying to research and get an answer to, and I'm hoping that someone here will be able to give their opinion.

Is there a right or wrong way to directionally mount a roller guide? What I mean, is if you look at a roller guide and picture where the line will run through, one side will have an "opening" and the other side will have the roller. Obviously for the stripping guide you want the rollers facing the reel, but how about the others? If you look at pictures of rods, they seem to be mounted both ways.

So how do you do it and why?

with the winthrops shoe , ive seen it done either way, i think the stuarts also. Only seen the aftcos done one way.

For the Aftcos, how have you seen it done? With the opening (that doesn't have the roller) facing the reel or the tip?

This is driving me nuts- I've looked through catalogues, online at rod building sites, and there doesn't seem to be one way. I'm sure it's like the spro swivel thing that there is no front or back, but I'm just wondering if I'm missing something....to quote Forrest..."I'm not a smart man"

Shoe,
Put the guides on with the angled side to the reel if you want to be like the rest of the world---- or you can be a rebel and put them on backwards--- it'll work either way.

My 2 cents - no there is no wrong way round, but most people mount them with the curve facing back towards the reel for looks. I personally don't do this as I think that you would want the guide mounted in such a manner as to shed the line should it become hung up on one of the guides. Doesnt often happen, but it can and I'd prefer it if the line would naturally slide up and over the tip rather than stay wrapped.

Aftco and Winthrop guides are sloped either way round so put them either way for looks as the line will not hang up no matter what. Hope that helps.

I contacted Aftco about this last year. On the stripper guides, if they have aftco stamped on the frame, it faces the fisherman. On all other guides, the fish that is stamped on the top of the frame faces the fisherman.

Believe me - If you don't do this every day, it is easy to make a mess. I started with my guides and then couldn't figure out the right way - luckily I had a JPR rod at home (and not on the boat) - The wraps are drying now...

And on the spro - If you look VERY carefully, you'll see one side is just a bit longer than the other. Long side goes to the mainline if I remember correctly.

But not on the Wintrop Stripper!Alot has to do with the size of the reel you intend to use on the rod for line feed.
