Calstar Boomer Help
I'm having CMS build a pair of 6' standup tuna/shark rods. Here's what I'm trying to do: Calstar Boomer Jrs to Aftco Short Curved storabutts with a spare straight butt. These will be matched with 50Ws running 80# spectra/mono. The short curved Aftco storabutt and optional straight butts will work perfect for both trolling and chunking. We switch up a lot and my CC doesn't have room for tons of rods/gear.
The short butts for stand-up gear limit options to Aftco #2 or #4s, The #2s are little shorter which work better for a standup rod. In the end, it comes down to the size of the blank. It looks like the blanks need to be cut to match up with the Aftco Ferrules. WTF? Since these are very fast action rods, it might be OK to cut the bottom of the blank to fit the aftco parts. I'm looking for any recs/help before they start work. Note, I prefer 6' (total length) rods so I can reach around the outboards. Here's snippets from the vendor specs: Calstar: Model Length Butt* Tip Line Action Recommendations BOOMER Jr. 5 1/2' 1.125 12 50-100 2X-FAST S/T 60-80 LB. i am not sure what you are asking
i do my GIANT STANDUP with the boomer series, great blanks, basicaly unbreakable, cheap price. and very "charter" friendly the GSU i do has a slick butt and aftco seat, and we cut the blank both ends (family recipe) all you would need to do is take the reelseat and slick butt off mine and add a #2 UNI, or stora thats what your looking for 6' OAL if you have a builder he should be helping you thats what you are paying for.. |

Paul, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks, man. And yes, the rod builder called me this AM to discuss. What I wasn't sure about is how much gets cut and where. Did you sand the butt section down or just cut? Then the guides. The original plan was a stripper plus 4 guides. Shoe and I were just talking and thinking stay with the stripper plus 4. I noticed your pics show a stripper plus 3. I'm all ears. Very nice looking rods! You do nice work.
PS Maybe I'll just get a stripper and save some cash ![]()

Chumtini - don't be afraid to cut down your blanks. Lay out the butt, blank, fore grip and guides all together on a bench and move the parts around until you get the set up and length you want. Could be stripper + 4, 3 or 2 strippers, whatever it is you think is right for you. Don't forget you can cut down the grip too.
I have used a rod with 3 strippers on it, was a short broomstick made to haul up big nasty swordfish. It performed well under heavy load that night though I doubt I'll build one with more than one stripper unless a client demanded it. The higher above the rod the line is the more torsion you will get so I dont think there is much to gain with more than one stripper. My $ .02 Here's the rod loaded up on a swordie- ![]() |
