just a quick question is it a good idea to strip down the old guides on a rod and service them with grease etc and clean them off? if so what would you recommend i do while its all apart?

Hell ya. I don't care what Aftco says in their marketing hoopla, the bushings should to be cleaned and lubed annually. Use Penn water proof reel grease--- That's not the exact name but it is grease not the oil. a little dab 'l do ya.
