A few friends of mine recently returned from a trip to Jaco Beach, Costa Rica. While there we charted a boat out of Playa Hermosa, landed 4 good sized mahi mahi. I love fishing, and have a few questions. I will be returning to the area in about a week. I will be staying for 6 months or so. I was wondering how the surf fishing is around the Quepos/Dominical areas. I was wondering if I should bring my own rod, or if I would be able to come across cheap rods/tackle while down there? I am fairly new to surf fishing, especially in central america. I was also wondering what kind of bait/lures are preferred and what kind of catches to expect. Thanks a lot! Sorry for the very basic questions, I have a lot to learn!

OK, so I am new to surf fishing, too. Have done some. Never right, never with focus. But we're heading down in mid-March so I've been pestering guys in stripersonline.com for guidance.
You can find the roosterfish around anywhere that there is some sort of structure on the bottom and they usually like live bait or jigs.
You can also fish the river mouths between Quepos and Domincal for snook. You can look up my friend Dave Dobbins in Quepos when you get down there. He does a lot of surfing fishing mostly for snook. He will even take you with him and show you some goods spots to go. You can check out the fishing reports on our site www.FishLamanta.com he has made a few posts about the surf fishing you may need to look back a few months to find them. I'll try and look them up and repost on here for you.
I fished the river right in dominical for about two hours casting every artifical i had with no success but the locals swear there are snook in there. The locals where using live biat maybe thats the key. Domincal is an awsome place, its one of the best places ive ever been. If you have some money see if you can find Capt Mark on the Mako1 he runs a little charter boat business out of a cove just south of domincal you wont be disapointed.

The river mouth fishing really depends on the tide and the moon, and it seams like the locals are the only ones that can figure it out. I've fished the river mouth in dominical several times and never caught anything until a local took me out on the right tide and we had a hit on almost evey cast for about 2 hours. It was pretty awesome.
Have a client down rite now who got a nice rooster casting a bagleys finger mullet in the surf right out in front. Then we went up to puntaranus on a tip and casted to several big roosters that were busting mullet. No takers but I am told they werent really snappin' We will definately be back as soon as the tides are good again becouse this place has a LOT of potential.
