First day of season fishing w/ Dick Tanner of Billfish X-Treme League and Capt. Whitey from Grand Slam. Left Los Suenos and headed for the ledges off Cabo Blanco. Stiff 15 knot wind out of south coupled w/ out going tide had 4-6 quartering seas. Just the way we like it. Made the 35 mile run and began to put spread out. Had 20# dorado b4 all lines out. Nice start. Missed a jumbo 40# dorado on teaser 15 min. later. About an hour later saw Tuxedos and birds through binoculars. They were moving fast to the west. Put out Hawaiian eyes and w/ in 15 min. had on nice tuna. 30 min. later double gaffed 120# YFT. But during battle lost birds. Decided to pick up and run further to west to find. 15 min. into running, heard on radio Capt. Ronnie on the Hook had 2 marlin up and a few sails, but he was 15 miles to the east. Made u-turn and plowed thru the seas at 25 kts. When we get to numbers were Ronnie was last, they had moved 6 miles to the south. He had raised another marlin and another sail. Decided to troll the 6 miles. W/in 5 min. had first sail on w/ quick release. 20 min later released 2nd sail. Caught up to Ronnie and 3 other boats, but radio was silent. Damn. Did we miss our shot at "the man"? Saw a tight ball of bait on my screen and began tight circles. W/in 10 min. had 175# Blue marlin on short teaser. My mate Russ dropped back on her but missed. Got on radio and was telling Ronnie we just missed a blue. BAM Right long goes down. Hooked up. Fish put on great show on 20# gear. Released 15 min later. Stayed in area another hour no one was doing anything. Headed home. 3pm. Have 4 trips this week. Now I know where to start. Will have pictures to post in a couple of days. Veni Vidi Cevici
