    Recommendations?

    Hi all:

The family is thinking of doing a spring break trip to Costa Rica to do some fishing in the pacific.

Any recommendations as to where to stay, what to watch out for, best captains, etc?

I've been surfing the web and found some interesting package deals, but would prefer hearing from someone who has experienced the trip. I think we would prefer a 7 night trip with 3 or 4 days of offshore fishing. We definitely want to be staying beach side.

We are taking our children so I am looking for something right on the beach that is safe.

    Thanks!

Hello there. Im from Costa Rica and can help you out. There are good options for the request you are making.

I would recommend the beach town of Samara first and foremost. Its located some 35 minutes from the town of Nicoya. You can find a secure, well equiped beach front cabin, villa or hotel and there are good charter captains in the area catering to offshore, inshore and deep jigging enthusiasts. There are also many restaurants and bars in the area, along with convenience stores and a pharmacy. there are a lot of other things to do besides fishing too, like water sports and adventure tours like canopy or horseback riding. The beach is long and sandy with a couple of rock outcroppings and a couple of river mouths that constantly produce fair sized snook if you're looking for some surfcasting action as well.

Then there's also Tamarindo on the North Pacific. Many people know of this place although I would recommend you rather stay at Playa Grande which is less crowded, more relaxing and a 10 minute ride from tamarindo. There are a couple or restaurants in the Playa Grande area and a convenience store. There are a lot of houses, apartments and other accommodations where to safely stay with your family and friends, beach front of course. there are also other tours available as well, mountain biking, canopy and esturay tours. This is a great place to take a tour and watch leatherback turtles lay their eggs at night.

Last, but not least, there's Manuel Antonio. A very beautifl spot on the central pacific. There are lots of luxury accommodations thar are located beachfront. There are also a lot of good charter captains and crews that depart from Quepos, around a 7 minute car ride from Manuel Antonio. This is a very popular place specially because of the Manuel Antonio National Park.

All of these places have their own charm and beauty. You can find nice acommodations and great crews in the area. I can definetively help set you up with a tailor made package if that's something you are looking for.

Visit my site for more information. http://www.sportfishingcr.net. It's being graphically renewed so please bear with me on that, but there's definitively a lot of info on the places so you can make up your mind.

I personally am partial to the north pacific, either Playa Grande or Samara because they are my favourite spots, and also I've had good luck on when fishing these places. There's good fishing, the beach is beautiful, there are a lot of other things to do besides fishing and you can find anything you right then and there.

This is me (with a light blue shirt) on a good friends boat the last time I headed out of Samara. We caught this stripped marlin and a couple of smaller sails. The fishing grounds are close by, around 40 to 50 minutes. The available charters are all stocked with the gear you'd need. Rods & reels, lures, bait, GPS, Sonar, VHF and other safety devices, snacks and beverages are all included.

When is your spring break? I know different schools do it at different times.

Up above Nosara towards Flamingo you'll want to avoid if your kids spring break is early like end of Feb and beginning of March. They are still having the Papagayo winds and you won't get out.

There are plenty of other great beach location in CR. Puerto Jimenez which we service. Dominical, Manuel Antonio all have good fishing at that time. Manuel Antonio is the touristy of the bunch and the other two are more natural areas. Plenty of eco tourism to go around in CR.
