Presidential Challenge of Costa Rica:
Don't Miss the Fun! March 24-27, 2011
Tournament fishing in the Presidential Challenge goes back to the roots of the sport, where a group of like-minded anglers would gather together in some of the world's best fishing destinations for a little friendly competition. They also understood the importance of conservation, donating much-needed funds directly to the resources that would do the most good in assuring a healthy fishery for future generations to come.
Fifteen years later, that spirit is still very much alive in the Presidential Challenge of Costa Rica, scheduled for March 24-27, 2011. Anglers from across the globe still gather to participate in some great fishing and also to share the cameraderie and fun of the tournament.
The tournament location in Carrillo is reminiscent of 'old Costa Rica'--a simple anchorage tucked into a scenic corner of the bay serves as home port for the event, where anglers are ferried to their waiting vessels each morning and evening by dinghy or panga from the black volcanic-sand beach.
Offshore, the fishing grounds range from 15 to 50 miles distant, with notably some of the nation's best fishing for blue, black and striped marlin along with Pacific sailfish. In fact, Carrillo is known as perhaps the best spot in Costa Rica to release an elusive grand slam of three billfish species in one day. The tournament supplies Berkley 20-pound test line as well as independant observers for each day, ensuring a level playing field is had by all.
The host resort, the beautifully scenic Villas Playa Samara, offers individual villa-style rooms, a great restaurant, large pool with swim up bar and much more. Its' beachfront location means that it's just a short walk from anywhere in the resort to the beach, and the anchorage in Carrillo is just ten minutes away. A staff that really strives to make their guests comfortable completes the package.
Tournament entry registers a team of three into the Presidential Challenge series, with the opportunity to compete for the titles of Costa Grand Champion Team and Eagle Claw Grand Champion Angler during the season. A festive welcome party following registration, nightly cocktail parties after fishing and a gala awards dinner and celebration are all included, among other tournament amenities.
Finally, proceeds from the PCCA event go directly to fund vital conservation projects by The Billfish Foundation in Costa Rica. The nation's billfish stocks are under constant attack by commercial longliners and purse seiners, so it's imperative that funds continue to be raised in order to ensure good fishing and a bright future for Costa Rica's eco-tourism.
