Los Suenos green season fishing report -JACO, Costa Rica

High tourist season here in Jaco runs from Chistmas through Easter, but that doesn't mean the fishing gets bad once the crowds of tourists taper off. the Green (rainy) season starts in may and runs through oct, or early November. It can be an awesome time to visit. lots of discounts, on lodging, and activities, plus allot less crowd, even though Jaco stays pretty busy. The weather is not too different than Florida during these months, plus we don't have to worry about hurricanes! It does rain, but usually in the evening, a few nights a week. most days are beautiful, temp's in the 80's, sunny, typical calm costa rican seas. the billfish never go away entirely, they do taper off a bit, but there is a steady pic at sailfish and marlin throughout the summer. anglers should expect to see 2-10 billfish a day trolling, and multiple shots at marlin are not uncommon. Logs and debris floating offshore is much more common during the green season also. Finding a good log, or tree floating offshore and they can be LOADED with dorado( mahi- mahi) , small yellowfins, tripletails and lots of baitfish which can make a day of light tackle fun. and bridle up a small yellowfin tuna, bonito, or skipjack and send it back out with a hook on it, is a good way to to add a marlin or two into the mix.
My favoite part of green season offshore is that it means TUNA season here. The bigger yellowfins are possible year round. But green season is peak tuna time. The bigger yellowfins here live and travel with packs of porpoises. finding the porpoises is key to finding decent sized tunas here. preferably spinner dolphins. these pods of dolphins with tunas are usually found 30-50 miles out this time of year, but sometimes closer. The sight of these tightly packed groups of small porpoises, jumping and spinning, with flocks of gannets, frigatebirds and albatrosses , diving on the baitfish being chased out of the water by the tunas busting the surface, is like a National Geographic show being filmed live in front of you. they can be caught trolling with baits or cedar plugs, but on La Vida, our 32 contender walkaround, our favorite tactic is to follow the bird action, run in front of the porpoises, and once we mark fish on the sounder, toss a live bait (blue runner) off the back, and cast poppers on our specialized shimano spinning outfits , off the front. as you can see in the pics, this works quite well. to me there is no more satisfying way for a client to catch a nice one, than him (or her) casting a popper them self and having a good 80-100#er crash it on the surface. Be ready for a Fight! and yellowfins can get big here. fish over 200# are not uncommon during green season.
Green season is peak season inshore in this area. Lots of bait around, and lots of big fish chasing them. lots of days I do not need to run more than a couple miles to have a successful trip. On the right tide, bait can be caught within sight of the marina, and where the bait is, often the target species is not far behind.we catch lots of Roosterfish, ,abundance of Jacks ( AJ's,horse eye, crevelles,)and some cuberas, soaking Live baits around rocky points and dropoffs. roosters in excess of 80# are common here, and put up an unbelievable fight. Cuberas between 20 and 60# are fairly common and one of my personal favorite species. they are smart, and wary, as well as tasty. there are also lots of smaller species of snappers available nearshore, such as Lanes and schoolmasters/ dog snappers, which make a great dinner fried whole.
There are some rocky bottom areas off the coast, which offers a great variety of species to pursue. what is there varies day to day year round, It is a mix of both inshore and offshore species. during green season, there is quite a few small wahoos 10-40#, lots of smaller yellowfin tunas, occasionally dorado, sails, and even black marlin are possible here. the largest Black ever caught in CR was caught here in the 90's. there are also all types of jacks, and several types of snappers (cuberas, dog, mullet, rockeros, schoolmasters, silky and colorado). this is an awesome spot to spend the day, doing all types of fishing. troll for a while, then switch over to live bait, jigging and casting poppers to keep the action going all day long. you never know what you will catch here.
for the more adventurous, I also have several spearguns available, for qualified clients. you will be amazed at the life in this area.
It is also possible to see dolphins, porpoises, pods of humpback whales , and manta rays on the way there and back, plus it is usually flat calm, so it makes a great trip for the family.
