Los Suenos fishing- sept & october

    Text still in the works

The tourism business slows down a allot during Sept and October here in Costa Rica, but the fishing stays good. I wish more clients would come to get out fishing more this time of year, we really have some beautiful days, regardless of the reputation of "Rainy Season". I took a pretty epic couple week trip down to panama aboard the Done Deal' in September which I will write about in another post, I will save this just for my Costa Rica report.
Offshore the tunas have been very consistent, almost a sure bet everyday throughout these months. it is common for the few boats making it out to catch 10 or 15 small to medium sized yellowfins between 20 and 80 lbs, and this is a really good time of year to have a chance at big ones up to 300lbs.
Aboard La Vida, we always carry live bait out with us, and when we find the birds and porpoises, I like to pull in front and watch my sounder for the tuna marks below. when it looks like we are on top of them, my mate throws a live runner off the back and I have my clients cast a couple poppers off the front. this usually results in triple header, after triple header. tunas love the poppers, and if you haven't experienced casting poppers to tunas, then you are missing out on some of the most fun fishing there is. everbody who gets the chance, loves it. people are amazed to be able to cast a popper on there own and have 30 to 100lb fish (and sometimes bigger) crash on it, just a few yards away.
Yellowfins on spinning gear are a fight no matter what setup you use. I have a few shimano terez 7'8" popping rods with saragaso 18000 spooled with 50# power pro that work awesome, but lots of time when tunas crash the popper the get foul hooked outside the mouth, which give them lots of leverage. If you hook one over 100, your in for a good fight no matter where he is hooked.
I usually only kill a few hundred pounds of fish, mainly because of space and ice limitations. I hate to see a good fish get wasted. four 80-100 pounders and a few 40-50 pounders fit well and is more than enough for everybody to be happy. anglers are usually beat after that anyways.
This year we also experience a really good sailfish bite the first couple weeks of October. raising 10- 20 fish per day for a couple weeks was the norm before the rain started.
since the rain stopped a couple weeks ago, we have had some really dirty water getting pushed out from the down pour. lots of logs, trees and everthing else floating around as well. the clear water has been a ways offshore which kinda put and end to the great sail bite. but we had some really good dorado fishing with it. the tunas were still out there too, the big one in the photos below was caught aboard La Vida on oct. 28, on a popper of course. we caught a few smaller ones as well that day.
I also like to do some spearfishing whenever I get the chance, the visibility is pretty poor this time of year, bu it is manageable at some spots a few miles off the shore. Lots of snappers, and a few different types of them, Cuberas, mullet snapper, and pacific reds "guacamayas" are all pretty common. there are also quite a few wahoos in the same spots these months. if you are not into spearfishing, they all can be taken live baiting, vertical jigging and on poppers too.
