Los Suenos Costa Rica 2/10

1/24the weather has been absolutely awesome down here and the fishing is once again improving after a slump following the full moon a few weeks ago.
the past week the temps have been upper 80's during the day and about 78-80 at night, seas have been extremely calm, barely any wind or even ground swell in the area.
i fished a few days with my boss and his guest aboard out 57 Bertram and one day a couple other days offshore on My contender La Vida Inshore a couple days with Dean and his family
offshore the fishing has been good and a short run most days boats starting and staying around the corner or craters ( about 20-25 miles from LS) are typically seeing 8-15 sailfish per day, getting bites out of most of them.
there have been a few marlins around, but i would say the marlin bite slowed a little from a couple weeks ago. only about half the boats have been getting at least one shot per day the past couple weeks, I did catch 2 stripeys in the past 8 days.
there have been a few boats running out 35-45 miles but with mixed results. some days it seems hot out there, but some days the boats out there have had less than spectacular results.
Guys pulling dredges seem to be most consistently having good days. I usually pull 1 dredge, usually just rubber fish, it definitely seems to make a difference on slow days.I also feels it really helps bring up fish in packs to the spread. if you check out my Facebook link, you will see we do catch lots of doubles on a regular basis. ( i will post som pics to this report when i get home)
when I fished inshore with Dean and his family, we were after roosters, he did mention he had never caught a cubera, and we managed to catch a small one about 12-15 pounds in the first 20 minutes about a mile from the marina. we also caught a decent sized yellow snapper (sort of like a dog/ schoolmaster you would see in the caribean) shortly after. Dean is a serious angler, and did not give up on casting the popper the whole day. his effort did pay off, he caught one rooster about 20# on the popper, and probably, 15 to 20 jacks also throughout the day. along with lots of other bites, boils and crashes that dd not stay tight. I like seeing guests so dedicated to getting involved, and hands on, casting the popper. I was gad to see him catch his rooster on one, he definitely deserved it. lots of clients ask about catching one on the popper, but give up after about 5 minutes.we took a break and the family snorkeled around tortuga for a couple hours, and fished negritas late in the day, where one of his sons landed a nice 60# rooster.

a couple nice roosters fishing afternoon half day inshore around nicoya, including this one in the pic. my friend capt Jeff caught 4 in a full day today.
we also caught several jacks and various baitfish.

I found a rock out in about 250ft about a month ago while running out to fish offshore, looked good, so i have been waiting for a chance to get back and check it out. I was hoping to find silky snappers.
I had a half day trip on satuday 1/28 ran to the 26 to fish for a bit, we caught some bonitos to use for live bait, put them out and caught a sail about 5 minutes later, shorty after we had another sail bite but missed it. began dropping down butterflyed bonitos, had one nice fish on but got chafed of on something, and then we caught a nice sized green barred snapper/ rockero.
action slowed so i ran to check out the new rock. dropped down some dropper rigs with squid and immediate got hooked up, - no silkys, but lots of grouper. we caught about 50 in 2 hours, we did release most of them. but kept enough to eat, they did give us some great action on the butterfly jigs, it was great fun
Had to go back the next day for a while with some other clients, caught 20-30 more, released a bunch of them for the future.

Fishing offshore has been good past few days, monday 1/30 we were 6 for 9 on sails saw about 12.
stayed right on the corner never left about a 1/2 mile circle from where we got our first bite all day.
tuesday did a tortuga island trip.
wends oil changes
today, 2/2 fished offshore started on the corner, caught a couple sails moved to the pocket and ended up 8 for 14 on sails for the day.
condition have been great, flat calm seas, sunny temps in upper 80's
2/3
fished today near the same area as yesterday, maybe a few miles east of the pocket.
about 23 miles from marina.
had are first bite and caught it, within a couple minutes of dropping the riggers, before we even had all the baits in the water.
as we got that fish on the leader, i noticed a shadow under the long rigger bait hanging short in the rigger just above the water. another sail was doing its best to grab the ballyhoo hanging in the air above it, but just could't reach it.
he must have made 10-15 snaps at it as i shouted " long rigger! drop back the long rigger! sail is trying to eat it! "
my mistake for not letting the mate know it was the right long rigger, as he walk to the other side and picked up the left long and started dropping it back. it was a little confusing as the left was still out in the water so he naturally thought the fish would be on that one.
the fish made a couple more snaps but lost interest before the confusion got cleared and someone picked up the correct rod to dump it. we missed it.
shame too, as you could have just bumped the lever in freespool and dropped it in his mouth.
shortly after we had another one rise and hit a teaser and then disappear, without switching over to a bait. then the fishing slowed for a few hours. we went without another bite until about 12. we saw lots of tailors, free jumpers and floppers all around, but none wanted to eat. we dragged bait in front of 5 or 6 different fish on the surface but they all had lockjaw.
consensus from everyone on the radio was the same, everyone was seeing them but not getting bites. we did come across a school of spinner dolphins, saw a few small tunas jumping but no bites out of them either, there were a few other boats circling them, but nobody was hooking up so I cruised off, and finally started getting sail bites again. my boys downstairs did and excellent job in the afternoon, we hooked 8 for 8 more bites, but jumped one of them off leaving us with a total of 8 for 9 or 10 on sail bites today.
never moved more than a 4 or 5 miles from spot i started, all day long. weather was beautiful, sunny skies, little to no wind, flat seas. upper 80's.
water was fairly blue with a bit of haze to it in some spots.
2/9 did an inshore / tortuga island trip with a group from Rhode Island, fished across the gulf of nicoya in the morning, looking for trophy roosters. lots of red tide patches around, and tide was low which I usually don't like, but action was good. there was lots of baitfish around, , our first bait out got hammered in about a minute, seem like a nice fish, but we pulled him off.
shortly afterward we caught a large rockero / green barred snapper sinking a dead bait back in the current.
caught some more bait, and found a current edge where we had a few good bites, right in the same spot but couldn't get the hook to stay. stuck with it, and finally pulled out this monster roosterfish. and easy 80lber, probably closer to 100lb, fought for about 40 -45 minutes, took us a couple miles from where we hooked it. good thing that the big roosters usually don't run to the rocks for cover, here at least , they tend to swim out to deeper water
made a stop at the beach at isla tortuga for lunch, and spent a few hours looking for some clear water to snorkel in, but a swell the stirred up sand, and the red tide bloom was not having it.
One of my good friends, fished inshore to the south, off hermosa, and esterillios, more action but smaller fish (fished full day) caught 8 roosters, ranging from 3- 45 pounds, and a couple cuberas about 20-35lb.
bottom fishing a littte further out, in the 200-400ft range has be productive as well, few boats catching up to 8-10 delicious silky snappers in the 5-15 pound range. a few groupers as well. ( i am not giving up my grouper #'s)
offshore the fishing has been very good and consistent for every body. best bite is about 40 miles SSE from marina. around the 50 51
Lots of sails around. only a couple marlin and a few dorado.
almost every charter boats fishing offshore reporting catching 5-15 sails per day right now. getting 10-25 bites per day. on average. post more pics and numbers later.
