hi guys,
i know i've been off the topics 8 months now, lot's to do but worth the time.
with th 2007 white marlin season we tested possibilities to get Billfish on the Fly, all new for us, til now there's no offshore flyfishing been offered here on the coast, so we're learning with invited friends and experienced customers.
last saturday may 5th we got our biggest one, a 80lbs white marlin on the fly, caught and released by Andrew Ferguson, i await his own report this week and will add it to this topic.
so here some pics first
compared to light tackle trolling on white marlin hook rate on the fly been very poor, to bring the fish in around 30' casting range doesn't mean to attract him right away to the fly, but still learning.
we used 4 hookless teasers, 2 electricals on the bridge to be handled by the skipper on the wheel and 2 manuals handled by 2 mates, while Andrew could concentrate on his fly.
i appreciate any tips/tricks of the experienced flyfishing buddies here, we get them up but how we can better our hook ratio?
tight lines to all
Mike
thanks Jer and Dave,
i am organizing my stuff pretty hard to go back to the forums, i missed the chats myself.
i am on the final stage buying two own charter boats without partners/ass., 38ft Bertram and a 36ft Trojan, to give the service i want to.
i've been searching the web for records/world records on the fly for billfish, looks pretty much like the Igfa database is the only one and of course only visible for members, and i am really not that much in it to be a member of 'em, even agreeing on most of their points, but i started catch&release in our country with the 2005 season and from none of their 2 representatives in our country i received a contact til today, i even been in touch with their headquarters with different persons promising to contact their representatives, but the result been the same, zero, very poor.
so the records i found on the web show the florida records which include a white on the fly with 68lbs, makes me proud man.
i think within the next 2-3 weeks i will have the boat deals complete, a week later they will be equipped for fly, trolling bottom fishing and night fishing, so be sure by then i will storm your flyfishing board too to get all help you guys have to offer.
with or without the igfa my new services will not bring in trophies of billfish, not even for a tip of the crew, and in our local waters the effect of the releases is much higher than yours in the states. you guys have a lot of commercial fishing, so i don't think sportfishing can even touch a 5% of all caught billfishes over the year, we don't have commercials/longliners aso, so releasing here will preserve them all, i really have the dream to make our east coast to one of the world's top spots for billies, specially for our big quantity of white marlin. our billfish season til now runs minimum 6 months in a row each year, and we still did not touch the Swordfishes on nightfishing.
happy to be back online
Mike
