Old School "Trout & Reds"

Red October

It’s October again, and you know what that means. A lot of folks will be looking ahead to their preparations for entertaining family and friends at the deer and duck camps. And yes, the regular schedule of the college football season will be in full swing, with a lot of teams fighting to the bitter end in hopes of securing a bowl selection. And for many along the Texas coast, the month of October represents somewhat of a coming out party for the fall angler. As a huge number of Texas outdoor enthusiasts ready themselves for the advent of the year’s waterfowl and deer seasons, a lot of rods and reels will be carefully cleaned and stowed away in exchange for shotguns, duck decoys, and high-powered rifles. Now, I’m fairly certain that I’ll do my own fair share of duck hunting this season, but at the same time, I intend to maintain focus on fishing.

Redfish came to hand on Friday and Saturday while popping new penny or natural gulp under a rattle cork. Drifting the shell and flats proved best. The trout action was spotty at best, but several of our guides found a dozen or more trout for their efforts.

On Friday the lodge welcomed WSB Company returning for the 3rd visit this season with a 3-boat session. Captain Harold, TJ and Alan did a great job putting the crew on reds, trout and drum. Captain Nathan found a few reds and mix of drum for Cody H. and his 80 year old Grandfather. Captain Jason and Scott managed to put AL Company on a decent day of fishing, despite pre frontal howling winds and dirty water. Friday evening we welcomed fly-fishing guest Mark W, the John H. party, and a group with Tommy W. for an 8-boat schedule on Saturday and Sunday. Again like Friday, redfish was the main focus, especially with a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Moreover, dealing with lightning on the water is extremely dangerous. The weatherman missed the mark on this forecast, and we never experienced a single raindrop. Fishing actually turned out pretty decent with many reds being landed. The really cool part of the day, many of guides said they caught anywhere from 30 to 50 reds, which were released. Also the trout action kept everyone busy, despite many small fish returned to the bay. Captain Rick was able to locate multiple landings of reds with his fly-fishing guests. They even booked another trip with us before departing.

Saturday night during the wee hours, the lightning and thunder was awful, but if Sunday is anything like Saturday’s weather, we will have a wonderful opportunity to catch fish. Reports to come.
