5-3-12 Fishing and Report and FISHING SCHOOL FOR KIDS INFO!!!
Wind and rain kept many of the trips on the docks in the last two days. Capt Matt waited till this afternoon to try and salvage a near shore trip. We prepared for a little wind a rain, but not for the monsoon. Luckily Capt Kenny with the Dean crew(Scott, Nan and Clair) joined us for a near shore trip. I had 3 generations of Austins on the boat from Wisconsin on Tuesday. They had fished with Capt Matt the day before, catching big trout, reds, flounder, shark and triple tail. Had some big sandals to fill, but they were glad to be on the water. The 20-25mph winds came later in the morning, so both boats got fish in flat calm water for 2 hours. Kenny was on day two with his crew, they did well in the marsh on Monday as well. They added Mrs Clair with the understanding that she would be minutes from the dock if she did not like it. She stayed all day and Kenny said she had a ball. Both Kennys crew and my crew and mine enjoyed the close run, big fish and easy fishing the near shore trips provide. My guys went 1 for 3 on the sea monster black drum. Since they did not keep any fish, they said next year, all they want to do is fish the bridges. In YO FACE Capt Matt! A bunch of black drum junkies like myself, what a world. I can't stress it enough, not everyone is up for a marsh trip. Some folks, young and old, man or woman, just like an in close trip. Hungry big fish that pull hard in(for the most part) protected water is the way to go some days. Some people work their way up to an all day marsh trip. I gave up years ago caring about where I am fishing and what I am catching, as long as I am fishing... In other news, Shore Thing Fishing Charters has teamed up with the Bay Waveland Yacht Club for a first time ever YOUNG ANGLERS FISHING SCHOOL. 4-30-12 Report Capt Sonny
Fun, easy day fishing Monday. All 4 of the Shore Thing boats were out, and all found plenty of fish(specks, reds, triple tail, sharks and flounder). I had an old buddy join me. Good friend and old deck hand Capt Harry Crosby Jr came to fish the skinny water. Harry was my first deck hand when I made the transition to captain from deck hand in Venice back in 2003. He and I have had some amazing catches. H

Harry made captain years ago and runs private boats and runs charters with the Venice fleet from time to time. Never been inshore fishing with my old pal, so it was a treat to be met with flat calm seas. Ride across to the LA Marsh took no time. Never got a chance to catch up on the gossip, the trout were thick. Did not set any size records Monday, but the bite was about as good you could ever ask for. Harry and I put 50 in the box before 8:20AM! Would have been sooner, but the sharks and porpoise were on two of the spots we hit. Saw a palm sized triple tail as the sun was coming up before we got to our first flock of birds. After we finished catching trout, we went back to where we saw it. A well placed cast with a live shrimp and we were able to tag and release the little guy. Saw Five triple tail, 2 babies, 2 free swimmers and 1 under a float. Tagged a baby and got one for the dinner table. Always a good day on the water with an old fishing buddy. Saw Capt Kenny Shiyou at our second stop with the Dean group(2). He had been chunking topwater at first light. He held up one of the troutzillas he caught and even from 40 yards away it looked huge. Heard their biggest went 4.4 lbs.
He said they got about 15 like it. Last I heard he was about to finish off their limit and start looking for triple tail. His crew went 2 for 3 on triple tail, their first ever. Everyone had personal business this evening so I don't have accurate numbers on the boats, but they all did well. I heard Capt Kyle on the radio as we were heading home early. He said the trout they were in did not need to me measured. Sounded like the bull reds and sharks were messing up his trout bite. He had a two man crew(Tom and Dutch) and sounded like they enjoyed the big fish more than the tasty trout. I do know all four of the boats caught triple tail today. Busy time of year, and the pictures will surely tell the story. They will be here or on the Shore Thing website(Fishing Reports) in the next day or two. So far this has one of the better Aprils we have seen in several years. I hope the good fishing only goes to incredible in the coming months. This has the makings of one heck of a year. Call or email if you want to get in on the action...
