Crappie guide trips on the Red River (seasonal).

February 2012

There have already been two over 10 lbs caught with the largest tipping the scales at over 11 lbs!!

Bistineau is at normal pool level & the big ones are showing up.This should help out the spawn this year. Typically in February, the fish are going to be along the main channel and sloughs. Concentrate on the points and isolated trees off the main tree lines.

Black brown amber or black blue pattern 7/16oz or 9/16oz. Southpaw Jig & pig combo, Texas rigged dark colored creature baits rigged with a 5/16 or 1/4oz weight and a 100 series Citrus Shad Bandit crankbait should be the baits of choice.

Tree lines in 8 to 12 feet of water normally produce in the early morning or colder weather. If a warming trend moves in, try the inside edge of the tree lines. Same baits should work other than adding a 3/8 oz white chartreuse Picasso spinnerbait for slow rolling around the trees.

The Red River Fishing Forecast

Feburary 2012

BASS~

With the water temperature still hovering around 60 degress in the back waters most of the bass will be on the deeper drop offs or outside bends of the oxbows. The magic depths seem to be from the bank out to 10 feet of water. This all depends on the weather and air temperature. We have received a lot of fresh water which has made the main river have a strong current and very muddy. Some of the back water areas are in the same condition. The key will be to find the cleaner water in the back water areas.

Crawfish pattern 7/16oz or 9/16oz. Southpaw Jig and pig combo or Texas rigged dark colored creature baits rigged with a 5/16 or 1/4oz weight should be the baits of choice. Fish these baits slowly around the edge of the drop offs in the timber. If there is a warming trend move up shallow to the 5 foot areas near the deeper water.

For suspended fish in the same areas, try a 100 or 200 series crawfish pattern or La. Shad pattern Bandit crankbait. Fish the crankbait with a stop and go retrieve & bang it off the stumps.

Crappie~Shiners and small crappie jigs tipped with shiners fished along the edge of the ridges in the oxbows should be a good bet on the Crappie.
