Monster Mako

What a year this has been so far. A lot of crazy weather patterns, much windier than usual. But nature has been nice enough to let us get offshore just enough to take advantage of the fishing this time of year. The big story from the past couple of days is Capt. Bob Kenney and deckhand Matt Thomas along with customer Shane Finley and Mike (Owner of Easy Lube in Slidell, La. and the angler of what would turn out to be a beast). Yesterday, Feb. 19,2008 while fishing 18 miles off the coast of La. Mike hooked a Mako Shark unknowingly, since they were fishing for tuna, and the story only gets better from there. Fishing with 80lb. mono. and a circle hook Mike, managed to keep the shark on, after countless aerial back flips and twists, getting caught in another boats anchor rope, in 20 minutes they had him boat side with a flying gaff and a quick shot to the head with a .410 shotgun using buck shot. Another two shots were added just in case. For those who have dealt with Mako sharks before you know why. They brought the shark into Venice Marina and unloaded him with a fork lift. There were no scales big enough to weigh the 12 footer so they loaded him into the back of Pick-up truck and weighed him at the commercial docks. The official weight is 775 lbs. It was an incredible catch to say the lease. The fish would have been the New Louisiana State Record beating the old record by 10lbs. but the Louisiana fish records rules says no fish can be shot, if you want the fish to qualify to be a record. Oh Well, I can guarantee you it will always be remembered. The fish was cleaned and taken home by the customers after she was weighed. Enjoy the pics. of this tremendous animal.

Thumbs up

Great Job, nice Mako. Those circle hooks usually end up where they should. This is a great example of that, no wire just mono to the hook, and a 775lb Mako is in the boat! Congrats

Chances are they were fishing the Midnight Lump.A salt dome that is in 450' of water were as the water over the dome is around 212'-225'.Nearest rig is about 4.5 miles to the north.Target fish there at this time of the year are monster yellowfin tuna which hasn't really show up.They did catch a few nice ones back in mid Jan,but it has been way off this year so far.Type of fishing is going on the hook and chumming.

I will be heading down saturday night for a chum trip. There should be about 200 boats there with the weather farcast they a calling for.

reminds me of the 11' blue we brought in on 50lb mono, circle hook, on a penn 30! When those circle hooks hook where they are meant to hook, everything is just dandy! AWESOME MAKO

Flat, Does this help?

The location is about 20.14 miles from Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River at a bearing of 202 degrees.

That makes it about 49.64 miles at a bearing of 152 degrees from the red No. 12 marker in Barataria Pass, which is at a point in the channel that is between Grand Isle and Grand Terre Island, and about 48.8 miles at 142 degrees from the center of Caminada Pass at the western tip of Grand Isle.
