Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Weekday Special and Topwater Action!

I don’t know what it is about the rain but it makes the fish go nuts. Possibly the dropping pressure and the rain mixing the water to add more oxygen but whatever it is it works. I don’t think I have ever had a bad day fishing in the rain and this past weekend was no exception. It didn’t stop raining all weekend long and we were catching fish hand over fist the whole time. We even experienced the first topwater bite of the year and brought in some big fish on topwater. Lake Texoma water temperature was reaching into the mid to upper 60’s but this weather has dropped it back down a few marks. The elevation is just a little below normal at 614 and most likely rising after this weekend. The main food source for the striper, the threadfin shad, have suffered a severe die off this past winter due to the extreme cold temperatures. They are in the process of restocking the lake with shad and after this years spawn they should be back to normal. However, in the absence of their main forage, the striper are hungry and feeding better than ever for this time of year. We have been catching our limits in about an hour on every trip for the past 2 weeks now. Fishing is on and it is time to make your way to Texoma to experience some of this madness.

The fish this past weekend were most all caught using shiners either on anchor or drifting. Fishing on anchor in 25-30 ft. of water over the ledges of creeks and river channels coming off of a flat is producing our numbers while drifting shallow water in 10-15 ft. using big gizzards and black salties are producing better quality fish. We are also fishing topwater at times and that is producing our biggest fish. There is nothing I love more than seeing those big stripers blow up on a pencil popper.

Due to the lack of trips booked during the week, I’m offering a weekday special of $100/person (3 person minimum) which will be good Monday – Thursday through the end of April. Also, I have had a cancellation for this upcoming Saturday April 24th in the evening if anyone is interested. Besides that cancellation, my weekends in April are full and my next available Saturday is the evening of May 22. However I do have slots available on every Sunday of May. Children 12 and under as well as active military are ½ price when accompanied by 2 full price adults. Trips will last a minimum of 4 hours on the water and everything is included with your fish cleaned and the red meat removed. You can book your trip online at www.stripersinc.com or you can call me anytime at (903)815-1609 and I’ll get you set up.

    Question I wonder...

Might be worth the drive south to check out some freshwater "rockfish" this weekend.

I went down there once, but it was summer time and there was too much boat/jet ski traffic...so maybe this weekend or I'll take a day off next week and give it another try. Now the bigger stripers (40lb+) they are further north on the Lower Illinois river, live lining rainbow trout around the dams.

***Update***We'll see what these fresh water "rockfish" are all about this Saturday...hopefully a good report to follow!!!
