Wintertime is usually a slow bite, but you take away the grass and a bunch of water and it gets even tougher. So, you shouldn't expect the numbers to be too great. On a positive note, your odds of a giant are better than normal and fish tend to bunch up in the winter. So, when you find them you can often catch several. Normally, orange and red rattle traps are my best bait for the wintertime. This year, since we don't have the grass, my arsenal is much more broad. My baits of choice include jigs, spinnerbaits, and chatterbaits. But so far, the trap has been my best cold water bait - even without the grass.
From now through the 9th of Feb, I am offering my wintertime 1/2 day special on Lake Fork. From 1 PM to sunset (6PM), I'm offering a 5 hour afternoon trip for $150 for 1 person or $175 for 2. However, I recommend a full day trip on the power plant lakes. From now through mid Feb, I'm offering first-light to sundown trips for $300 for 1 person or $350 for 2. That's nearly a 12 hour trip! We start at the power plant lakes and you have the option to go to Lake Fork and try to upgrade our catch.
Welsh and Monticello have much warmer water so the fish are more aggressive. Also, they spawn in the wintertime, so we can often find them on the beds.
On those lakes, you can't rule out any bait. So, you can fish whatever baits you have the most confidence in.
The power plant lakes are looking great right now. Monticello is full, with good clarity and 60 to 75 degree water. Welsh is lower than normal, but the water temp is 70 to 85 degrees and it has loads of grass with good clarity. I catch as many fish on topwaters there in the winter as I do on Fork the rest of the year.
