Trophy Hunter charters- fishing report 3-8

Fishing Cycles! / Posted by: Kenneth Brown / 03/07/11

For years our fishing has run in cycles. Every year we have good years for some species and slower fishing for others. This can occur for many reasons. Last spring for example, it would appear that we had slower gaffer dolphin fishing then the previous years. Actually, it was not that the fishing was slow but that the water conditions that support good gaffer fishing were too far away to reach. In return we had one of the better and most consistent years for the smaller dolphin that hang around all summer. We did have a slower year on the yellowfins. The bluefin fishing has developed over the last few winters to be as good as it gets. Where else can you go with certaintity and expect to get the opportunity to catch multiple tuna weighing over 200 pounds. Another good example would be the white marlin. Just a few years ago there was talk of putting them on the endangered species list. The last two years have been as good as any in history for white marlin fishing in August and September. You heard about all the huge numbers of fish caught and the long runs to get to them. What impressed me was that you could have an incredible day most any where you decided to fish. It was not very long ago 10 white marlin would have been a great day. On any given trip that could have happened in multiple areas and not just in the best fishing around. The point is sometimes we have good years and slow years. Sometimes there is a reason behind the fishing and sometimes it just happens. If you book a trip during the time of the year that produces the type of fishing you are after then success can be expected. We are very fortunate to have so many different things to offer. I recommend trying the white marlin action in late August and September before it changes again. Thanks!
