I fish in Buzzard's Bay/Vineyard sound/ Nantucket Sound rockpiles. I've been fishing for them for over 30 years before anyone would give you a nickel for one. Being of Portuguese descent, we always ate a lot of sea food and we knew a good tasting fish when we caught one. Still one of my all time favorites to catch and eat.

If you're in a good location (i.e. hard bottom) and they're not biting, MOVE.
Let some anchor line out (or make a move) and start over until you find a honey hole.

I use as light weight as possible, so you can feel them. Pay attention, they bite as soon as it hits bottom a lot of times. Especially on the way down. Before you even lock the reel, you may get a hit.

I use a medium action coventional outfit with 30 lb braid, makes a big difference. I use those virginia hooks that are snelled with thick black mason's line.

    BAITS:
    green crabs
    asian crabs
    fiddler crabs
    sea clams

    TOG BAITS

    HI:
IN the spring, we used fresh, salted Skimmer Clam(Sea Clam). We found that the Togs...aka...Blackfish preferred those baits early. Why? I don't know. We used to joke and say there lips haven't toughened up yet. Maybe all the deep crabs havent come out of there holes yet on the reefs where they winter over.
When the water warms up and the Blackfish start to get frisky, they jump on crabs, there main food supply. What kind of crab is a LOCAL thing I guess. For me HERMIT crabs were the way to go. For me, HERMITS were the all around producers. I hooked them in the back and let it dangle. By the time that bait hit the bottom, the TOGS were all over it.
The TOG rigs mentioned here are all great rigs. I guess my stuff is just a small variation of the rest already mentioned, so I won't bother with them.

Lotsa good reading on this one. I have nothing to contribute as I have caught very few but I can tell you one thing.......I am a little more educated now.
