Goodafternoon, ......This past week has been an outstanding week for fishing here at the end of Feb. and 1st of March. Last Wed. took a group fishing who live in little Washington, NC. We took his flats boat and went up on the flats behind Morehead City and the Newport River looking to catch Redfish on the fly and regular spin, ........WOW. The first place we pulled up to was a sand flat with deep pools and current ridges over it. For as far as the eye could see.........there they were, drum and plenty of them. Bill, my charter, first cast with the fly rod, came tight to a 28" drum. I was up on the platform in the mean time doubled over with a fish a little bigger than a slot size fish, on 6 lb. power pro and a Top Dawg mirrolure. For 7 hours we stayed on several groups of fish, between the two of us when it was all said and done we had caught and release 71 Redfish between 17-32", 18 on the fly and the rest on 6-12 spinning rods. Awesome I tell you for this time of year. The flys were a simple choice of copperheads and rabit tails, did catch two on crease flys. The fish on the spinning rods were caught on mostly Berkley Gulp baits. No particular one althoug I did notice they took a strong liking to the "smelt" style. We through these on 1/8 and 1/4 ounce gig heads.
The next day I took a fellow and his son from Kinston, NC. Fishing for Hickory and White shad up in the upper Neuse River. Once again, plenty of fish. Between the three of us it was constant action all day, we fished from 8:30 am to 5 pm and released 9 white shad and 63 hickory shad. Most of the fish were 1-2.5 lbs, however we did catch one white that was in the 3 lb. range. Fishing in the current eddies, throughing darts and spoons, crossing the current and lettling the gigs flutter down stream,....didn't take very long and you would have a shad airborn! Fishing 4 and 6 lb. spinning rods, we did the best on silver spoons and 1/16 and 1/8 ounce darts. Green and White with flash and Pink and Yellow with flash were our top producers.
Finally, yesterday, Saturday, took a local group here from Morehead Speckled Trout fishing up to Pamlico County, fished several branch creeks off of the neuse river. Plenty, Plenty, Plenty, Plenty, Plenty of specs. Four big fish, the others mostly small, but plenty of bites. Through mirrolures, fin-s on gig heads, the new berkley gulps once again, caught fish on all of them. Our big fish was 5.8 lbs.the other three larger fish were 4.8, 4.2, 4.1, and 3.8 lbs. all of the rest were just legal, which we released all of them. Awesome fishing guys, get out of the office and go fishing.
Any questions, please feel free to call or email anytime. Thank you. Capt. Brian Harrington
Yes, sir,...good fishing. Back to the Shad up the river tomorrow, supposed to fish offshore this Wed. and the weekend. Will give you a report. Capt. B.
Yesterday fished up in the upper Neuse River again in search of the Hickory Shad and White Shad. Again it didn't take very long for when we arrived the water level was way down and the fish were VERY concentrated in the deeper pools and eddies formed by falln' trees and off the points and creek mouths in the river. If you threw the "dart and spoon" combo into any of those places, we were doubled up. Same class of fish as the other day. 1.5-3lbs. Caught most of them on light spinning rods, however Bill did pick up the 6 weight fly rod and banged a couple on it real quick. We did not fish for them, but several boats further down the river were having an awesome day on the stripers fishing with cut shad and herring on the bottom. Also when we arrived back to the launching ramp, a fellow who had been fishing for catfish off the bank had one on a stringer that would of went every bit of 50 lb. +. Looked pre-historic.
Good way to pass the winter by, I am ready to get back in the Salt though. Good fishing. Thank you. Capt. Brian Harrington
