    OU Hatteras/Current Fishing Reports/Updates/Split Dates

Just received a report from Captain Darrin who is down in Hatteras, NC running Low Profile (55 Custom Carolina Boat).

December started off on a pretty good note here in Hatteras with a nice bite materializing up around the North East Rocks. The fish were there good and the boats that got out all had their shots, most coming back to the dock with a fish to offload. Darrin got out once with The Gambler, decking a fish that dressed out at 250 pounds. The run was about 28 miles out of Hatteras and the fish were holding in about 70 degree water, on a hard color change/temperature edge. Unfortunately they didn’t stay there too long and the weather got the best of them for much of the rest of December. With the hectic winds and cold temperatures in the first couple weeks of January, only a handful of boats have been out. Darrin’s been out twice and has seen a lot of bait, porpoises and running mates (of the tuna) in and around his fishing hotspots. Now we are waiting for the hard edge of cold water butt up against a body of warm water to come into the rocks so these trophies can find the bait. There has been loads of bait around the north beach and right now the offshore water temp. has been between 64 and 66 degrees. With the amount of bait holding in the area it is just a matter of time before the bluefins find it and decide to hang around for the winter. When they do show up, the run should be pretty short, only about 25-35 miles.

Last year, the Bluefin started to concentrate pretty well around the rocks starting in mid February. By late February, it was ON! We had the fish really good for about 4-6 weeks until mid to the end March when they moved up around the corner and the Oregon Inlet boys got their chance to whack up on em and we switched over to Yellofin Fishing. These Bluefins ranged in size from 160 to 270 average with some larger fished mixed in and provided great opportunities to target them jigging as well as trolling. Of course, Bluefin have tails and a mind of their own, but if things go the way they have, we’d expect more and more fish to be showing up, as we move into late January and early Feb. Just need the weather to cooperate so more boats can get out and look around.

Trey has a couple film crews coming in to shoot some action when the fishing heats up (probably Feb or early March) and will be looking for anglers to jump on. We are looking to capture some good Jigging action, so keep in touch with Trey as we move into February as there should be plenty of opportunities to get out with us on LOW PROFILE. Capt. Darrin also has Rick Rosenthol a Marine Biologist who has been studying the life cycle of BFT for years coming aboard to film a documentary on these awesome fish!
On a side note, the Yellowfin have been around as well, so when the Bluefin don’t show, we’ve got some other options. More on that later!

    Tight Lines,
    Capt. Tyler

Tyler/Darrin, Thanks for the update. Here are some dates we have guys interested in split trips. Pretty much need 2 guys per date, fishing 2 of 3 days mostly.

    Feb: 26-27
    March: 5-6

Also can use 2 guys on Feb. 28 - March 4th (will be filiming this week, weather/fish permitting).

Trying to do 4 way splits as much as possible, $375pp. We can do 6 if guys prefer at $250 per person...

Will have several more dates, just trying to pin some folks down. If you have a particular date you'd like to come down, let me know and we'll add it to the list and get you paired up.

    Tight Lines,

    Trey

and they bit again...not a good weekend to be down in Wilmington TALKING about fishing...ughhh. if weather holds, we will be going tomorrow. commercial limits were available today...fish a bit bigger.

After the commercial season ends tomorrow, we will start lining up split days. have a pretty good list of folks looking to get out at this point. We were gonna wait till mid Feb, but who knows how long these fish will hang around. They are here now....

The Bluefin Tuna Bite is on and we have a series of open seating opportunities. The tuna are being taken on troll, jig, and chunk about 25 miles from the dock. We will run these trips as long as the Bluefin stick around, likely through early March, then switch over to Yellowfin, Dolphin, and Billfish. Our trips depart about 6am, returning to the dock about 5pm. There are rooms available for about $90 a night at the Village Marina & Motel, where we dock. Cost is $300 per person, excluding gratuity.

Beginning this Friday we hosting Rick Rosenthal who is filming a Bluefin Tuna documentary for National Geographic. Should be quite cool...

got text from Dave on the boat this morning with a picture of a pretty sunrise on the water in Hatteras this morning. Then another about 8, saying "fish on". Then another saying "released a 90-100 pounder". then radio silence. one quick shot at them today was it. never had another bite. they said it got pretty sporty to say the least in the afternoon. I looked at bouy and it was 26 gusting to 30 or something like that... anyway. we are waiting to see what tomorrow morning brings and we go try again, if mother nature permits.

Just getting back to my computer. After a tough day on Friday, with only 1 bite, resulting in the one fish and the weather really taking a turn for the worse, Saturday prooved to be worse. No tuna bites for us and from what I heard, there were about 20 boats fishin and only 1-2 maybe ran over them. Lots of coverage and not too many fish. Again, conditions were not great.

The forecast for Sunday looked OK, not great, but everyone wanted to go and give it a shot, so luckily we did. I glanced at the bouy report this morning and saw it had totally laid out, and was hopefulll that more settled weather would lead ot better fishing.

Got a text a bit ago that they had a nice day, releasing 2, one of which was estimated at 300#, and boating one about 100#, along with a good bit of jigging action on blackfikns. I'm sure Darrin will be able to give us some more details on what transpired out there, but good news anyway. Looks like we are at the dock till Wednesday as things stand right now, then back at it. We have openings again starting Sunday, if anyone wants to get out.

Friday started out good, with a 100 pound class fish right off the bat (released), but unfortunately as luck would have it, that ended up being it for the day, and the weather really deteriorated. We got back out Saturday, with worse results. No tuna on Saturday. A lot of boats fished and only 1 I have heard about had tuna I think. Sunday, the weather settled, we went again, and the bite was once again good (believe most boats got on the fish). Our final tally was 3 fish boated/released and a few more pulled off. One was big one, at about 300 pounds. The other 2 were smaller 100 pound class fish. There was both trolling and jigging action. We will continue filming the rest of the week, weather permitting.

Looks like the next fishable day is Wednesday.

    got a few photos.
