OIFC fishing report 8-2
Josh Hughes" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 08/01/11
Below is a picture of a catch and release red snapper Brian Fimbel hooked up today while fishing with Josh Hughes and William "Frollie" Hughes" aboard Frollie's Yellowfin, the "Bay Pirate" at the Gary Ennis. Josh said the water was still 80 degrees at 40 miles out.

"Light winds and Tight lines" | Tiberias - 22' | 08/01/11
Bill Serafini called and said his two boys were ready for some spanish action again. Rocco and Gino. two of the cutest, yet the roughest toughest kids on the block. I love those names! We worked hard to catch the 4 Spanish we got to the boat. We also caught several sharks, toadfish, bluefish, and croakers. I hit one more spot on the way home and the flounder were pounding it. They were all just a bit shy of the new 15" mark. The kids were pooped and ready to head to the house, so we cut the flounder bite short.
Bart and John joined me today. We picked up right where we left the flounder biting the day before. The flounder were biting pretty good and we ended the day with 10 keepers. Hopefully the 40 fillets will feed the 22 folks back at the beach house! I enjoyed it folks. Thanks for fishing with us and hope to see ya next year.
Mullet minnows are getting the flounder bite. Shrimp are catching a few, but aggrevating to deal with all the trash fish. Pogies for some reason are not producing like you would think. Artificials in charturese, white, and smoke are still producing a few keepers in the canals. Spanish mackerel are scattered throughout the beach front with clarkspoons producing the action. Red drum have been scarce the last few times out, but we have seen a few nice black drum caught. Live shrimp is the ticket in catching the drum, but have a lot and be ready to deal with the trash fish. As you will see in one of my pictures, I refused to feed all of my shrimp to the fish. I ate them! That is a wrap for now. See ya on the water!

"Mac Daddy's Sail" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 08/01/11
Captain David Kiser and Jim Kiser of the Mac Daddy Fishing Team along with Kevin Smith made a run to the Horseshoe Saturday morning.aboard their 23 ft Sea Fox. They were pulling ballyhoo on Islanders at about 6 knots when they hooked up with 2 sailfish back to back within 30 yds. of the boat. The 1st fish was brought aboard for a photo op while the 2nd shook the hook after a good run. Things went dead after the action. They were slow trolling when they hooked up to and landed yet another sailfish. The guys have brought home mahi every trip to the Horseshoe except this one. But they aren't complaining.
Capt. Jeff Beck and I have hooked up with a sailfish. Nesbitt Nobel went 2 for 3 on sailfish. It would be a pretty sure bet that if you went to the Horseshoe area you'd hook one up yourself!.
Thanks for the info. guys.

"Sailfish Bite Heats Up" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 08/01/11
I have started to here quite a few reports of Sailfish being seen, hooked and/or caught over the past week. It seems like most reports I'm getting are of people catching multiple fish. Apparently most of the Sails are travelling in small groups of 2-4 fish. The bite was very good last week at the Eddie Hanaman Sailfish tournament out of Wrightsville Beach and that actions seems to be transferring to waters off our coast as well. Recent reports have Sails being caught at Horseshoe, Christinas ledge and Shark Hole.
Remember the annual Cape Fear Sailfish Classic tournament hosted from the OIFC will be held next week- Aug 12-14. To get information visit the tournament site at www.capefearsailfishclassic.com --
Take this opportunity to take part in this new fishery that is developing off our coast. The Sailfish numbers seem to be increasing every year, and thus targeting Sailfish is becoming a viable opportunity.

"Men and new toys" | Get Busy | 07/31/11
A few weeks ago I rode with Kris Thompson and brother Billy out to some nearshore reefs to check out his new toy. Kris put the new Lowrance side scan on his Carolina skiff. This is an awesome piece of equipment. Today we put it to test to see if it was worth the price tag. I think the pictures speak for the test results. Today is the first day w/o the usual 15 to 20 knot S.W. winds. The day started out with a double hook up. We tried drifting but the winds did pick up and switch and the changing of the tide so we anchored up and landed right on the spot. The side scan allowed us to back right up to the edge of the structure. No more rigs were lost and fish caught.
