""Carolina Slam'n in March"" | Tiberias - 22' | 03/12/11

Started of this morning working in the store. Aww....what a beautiful morning! I was itching something terrible to get on the water. Finally, I got out of there around 2:00...just in time for the last bit of outgoing tide. Usually some of the best fishing is had during this tide, especially this time of year as the water gets warmer as the shallows drain. I did find some 60 degree water, but no fish were willing to bite in that area. I picked Tubbs Inlet apart today along with two kayakers. Lots of mullet and pelicans diving everywhere. I never got a bite in there and the two kayakers said the same. I headed toward the bridge and got my first bite of the day. First flounder of the season for me. Not much else happening at the bridge so I moved on. I worked a few more areas and was about to give it up. Then a red drum hit the bait, but kind of hesitate as I barely had him hooked. I worked that area over pretty hard and again was on my last cast before calling it the day. BAM! Speckled Trout absolutely hammered the bait! Amazingly, with lots of presistence I was rewarded with my first Carolina Slam of the year. I hope to have plenty more of those to come this year! See ya on the water!

I will be giving a seminar on March 26th on how to use artificial baits to catch trout, redfish, and flounder. The owner of Deep Creek Lures will be here at the OIFC showing off some of the artificials I love to use. Henry Smith has designed some of the best looking baits and colors I have seen in a while. Stop by and check it out! Proof is in the last several reports that these baits work great! This is the only place you can get'em, so you better get'em while the gett'n is good! March 26th 10:00am!!!

""Seriously, Weatherman!"" | Tiberias - 22' | 03/12/11

I do believe the weatherman has scared us all from making our first run to the gulf stream this year! Current conditions at the tower....NNW 5 knots...Wave height 3ft....Wave period...12 sec...The wind is already starting to turn out of the SSW here. That means I can see slick spots in the ocean from the porch here. I can almost hear the drags screaming off the reels. NO WAIT! That is just my ear ringing from the pure silence of disappointment in the weatherman!

On a different note...Trout are starting to bite in the creeks and a few flounder have come out of the mud lately. The redfish are still hanging around, but seem to be under lots of pressure or just in transistion. It is getting time for the reds to start feeding on soft shell crabs and they will be difficult to catch without that bait. Just a reminder...TROUT CLOUSURE in North Carolina...you can catch them, but you must release them. It looks like we are going to have a beautiful weekend, so get out and enjoy it! See ya on the water!

""Ever Fished in a Wind Tunnel"?" | Tiberias - 22' | 03/11/11

Well, that is what it felt like today. The wind was blowing a good 15 to 20 WNW and gusting up to 30 at times. They say the fish bite the best in a West wind. Maybe they meant a light breeze from the West? LOL! We beat it to death! Finally, a few fish bit out of pure exhaustion from seeing our baits go by them. We had a total of five bites today. We landed two redfish and a trout. Chartruese was the color again today. We threw everything else from gulp pogies to fresh cut mullet, but no takers. I really think the passing front slowed the fish down a little and the wind made things difficult for the anglers. Regardless, this crew was all smiles, as this day was much better than being in snowy Ohio. See ya on the water!

""Inshore Rookies"" | Tiberias - 22' | 03/10/11

I made an attempt to put a couple of OIFC's finest on some fish today. The weather would have made anyone look like a rookie today. The first couple of cast were blown way off their mark. Once making a few adjustments to the wind the casting got a little better. Will and I both had a few bumps, but nothing willing to totally commit yet. Will finally got a hook up, but it was only for a few seconds. We moved around checking out a few different spots. We were experimenting with several different colors, but no serious takers. I finally switched over to a color that has been producing and landed a nice trout. We tried a couple more places, but the wind was really making things unbearable. We called it a day as the rain showers were also starting to show up. See ya on the water!
