Barrett and I made a quick round-trip run t Sarasota, FL to pick up the new Team OIFC touranment boat-- Yellowfin 32. This boat is the same as the one's we have been running in previous years, but powered with F300s instead of the F350s. We did give up some accelleration and top-end speed, but we are still plenty quick (hard to catch a fish at 60mph) and the economy is very impressive. I am glad to have a 32 Yellowfin back on our team as the ride and fishability are awesome.
So, we got back late Tuesday and why not go fishing? Wednesday was forecast nice, so Caroline and Brayden played hookie from school while Grandpa Rube and I hosted the two junior anglers on a fishing trip/boat break-in trip. We ran out toward the Jungle to try to find a King, but found none- I was surprised at this. However, we headed a bit deeper and caught several nice Grouper. I later found out that a red hot King bite had ensued that afternoon at Lighthouse Rocks -- no matter, Grouper eats better anyway. The boat did good, but most important, my two kids are really doing great on the boat. Even 2 year old Brayden is in to all of it -- I'm excited to have them as part of the team; they give me enthusiasm to go "fun" fishing more often.

"Grouper/King report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 10/06/11
On board yesterday with Brant and grandkids Caroline and Braydon as we cristened Brant's new 32 Yellowfin. Ran off to the Hammer[at 60mhp] thinking the Kings would be thick there. Water was ugly with lots of weeds, nothing but sharks. Moved further off to the BP-25, water looked much better, but still no Kings. Abandoned the Kings and went to work on Grouper, and I watched Brant catch our limit of Grouper while all I could catch were butt busting AJ's. Definitely got my feelings hurt as I "thought" I could catch grouper with the best of them. He finally disclosed on way back in that he was using floro-carbon leaders while I wasn't. I hope that was the problem with my catching. Heard the King bite went off at Lighthouse Rocks in the afternoon and mulitple fish being caught.
Looking at the weather for next few days, the only good news is our waters have pretty good protection from hard north/northeast winds, so anyone wanting to fish the beach for Kings should be able to do so, and probably, if the body of fish is finally arriving at Lighthouse Rocks, the wind should push them[and the bait]on into the beach. Yaupon/Lockwood Folly/Shallotte Inlet should produce fish. Beyond that, with the weather forecast, the spot bite should be on big time. Late next week a weak front comes thru, and hopefully the weekend should be good to get us back on the King tourney trail as both the Rumble and Swansboro will fish next weeked.

This reporter is showing dedication by carrying out his duties while in Daytona Beach. What I should have done was stayed put in Ocean Isle Beach and gone fishing with Henry and his daughter Virgina Beckham of O.I.B. Both are accomplished in shore anglers and can always be counted on to catch great fish. As the pictures show they were fishing at the Little River Jetties when they caught a 36 " drum, a 26" spanish as well as the others in the pictures.
Virginia was my sidekick at the OIFC a couple of years ago and she and her dad can always be counted on to give us good reports and pictures.
