    North Carolina report 8-25

    Fishing Rerport 8/23
Buxton Point had blues and spanish. Frisco Beach had sea mullet and pompano. Hatteras Inlet had lots of bluefish. The sound had specks and flounder. Excellent Spanish & Blues near shore. Offshore - excellent Dolphin, few Whaoo & few Blackfin Tuna.

    5-24-11 Outer Banks Fishing Report
It was a beautiful day. The Calm before the storm. Sunny skies and light east winds 5 mph. Hurricane Irene effects are expected to be felt as early as early saturday morning with gail force winds, then increasing the rest of the day. I have no report from the beaches. The inshore boats had a good day of speckled trout fishing. Offshore fishing was pretty good too. Good dolphin catches, some gaffer size and wahoo fishing was pretty good.

The pictures below are several miscellaneous shots from the past few days.

The 1st is from Brian Aycock from his and his sons trip to Cedar Island.

The 2nd is of McClures 33" red drum.

The 3rd is a shark Capt. Chris Dew and Capt. Chris Dawson caught and released today in 25 ft. of water off of Bird Island. They're still not sure what kind of shark it was.

    "Cedar Island" | Get Busy | 08/23/11

This weekend the Ocean Isle Inshore fishing crew took their annual trek to Cedar Island, for a weekend of fun and fishing. The group was made up of:

Brandon "Bonecrusher" Sauls, with hired guns Kyle Hughes and Gordon Grady. They were the top hook in the fleet with 12 monster reds, 5 on Friday night and 7 on Saturday night. They ranged in size from 25 lbs to 50 lbs.

The rest of the group consisted of:

Brian Aycock and his boys Austin and Brandon aboard the "Hail Yea"

    Daniel Simmons and Mark Staci

    Eddie Jones on Team Panga

    Eddie Julian and his sons

Scott Quaintence and his boys on Scott's Yellowfin bay boat

Clay Morphes and his brother on the Pork Chop

    Will King

Everyone caught fish with Daniel catching 44 flounder at Drum Inlet in 2 hrs and 15 min. The bite was red hot, but not so for the Boncrusher.

There were, as usual, several stories told. But what happens at Cedar Island stays at Cedar Island.

For the 2011 fishing year, all owners/operators of vessels recreationally fishing for and/or retaining regulated Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (HMS) (Atlantic tunas, sharks, swordfish and billfish) in the Atlantic Ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, must obtain an Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Angling permit. This permit has replaced the Atlantic tunas Angling category permit. In North Carolina, additional HMS harvest reporting requirements are also in place. To obtain a permit go to: http://www.hmspermits.gov.

    Report a tagged fish

Please Note: Anglers sometimes confuse small king mackerel with Spanish mackerel. King mackerel and spanish mackerel have different size and catch limits. Make SURE you properly identify the mackerel you are catching. (Tips here)

A recreational Recreational Fishing License went into effect Jan. 1, 2007 for all of the state's coastal and ocean waters.

For the week of Aug. 21

Ocean: Offshore, boats targeting wahoo had some luck, with fish weighing up to 90 pounds. Boats bottom fishing reported catches of grouper, vermilion snapper, amberjack and a wide assortment of reef fish. Closer to shore, good numbers of sailfish were caught in the 10- to 20-mile range. The 23-mile rock area off Wrightsville Beach has been good over the past couple of weeks. Near shore reef fishing produced some very nice flounder and spadefish.

Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Anglers targeting flounder found good numbers of large fish in Snow's Cut. Many citation-size fish were caught. The Cape Fear River from Carolina Beach to Southport also produced good numbers of fish weighing more than five pounds. Red drum and speckled trout continued to be caught in the bays and creeks behind Bald Head Island. Floating live shrimp was the most productive method, but artificial lures also worked.

Piers/Shore: Area piers reported a better week with Spanish mackerel and flounder catches improving. Spot, croaker, bluefish, sea mullet and pompano were caught in low numbers, as well. Surf fishermen reported an increase in the number of pompano and sea mullets from the surf.

Spanish mackerel can be caught by trolling just off the beach out to 3 miles or so. Try Blue Water Candy daisy chains or Clarkspoons early and late in the day or use a Got-Cha plug from the pier. Redfish have been in the surf but now are moving back in the creeks. Some blues have been caught around Masonboro Inlet and alog Wrightsville and Carolina Beaches.

    Near Shore
    08/24/2011
Grouper fishing has been productive from about 80 feet of water on out. Some nice mahi have been at the 23 Mile Rock along with some sailfish. King mackerel fishing has been slow but should improve as we head toward fall.

    Gulf Stream
    08/24/2011
Some wahoo to 50 pounds have come from The Steeples area recently. You can expect small blackfin to be mixed in the catch. Sailfish and white marlin should be in the area as well.

White Marlin! / Posted by: Kenneth Brown / 08/24/11

This was our catch from the 20th. Eight Whites and a couple of nice gaffers. This is the time of year that our marlin fishing gets the most consistent and the guys came looking for action. Glad they found some and had a good day. Thanks!

    More Whites - 8-21-11! / Posted by: Kenneth Brown / 08/24/11

Another good day with action scattered through the trip. Eight Whites again today and calm seas. What more could you ask for? Good to see everyone again and hope you had a good time. Thanks!

Our Alice Kelly ladies tournament report was another good year with a fun bunch of girls. They were tough with the wind picking up during the day but all in all they seemed to have a good time. The event raises money for breast cancer and is a local favorite for the ladies in our area. Our group won the biggest tuna and got to catch a first blue marlin. We had tough luck with a couple of whites but we will get them next year. Thanks for the email and hope all the girls had a good time!

    Release Sportfishing report

Today was a great day on the gulfstream with a light north wind. The fishing was good too which makes for a quick day. Justin Baer and his friends from PA were seasoned Release customers so they knew what to do when the action started. Wahoo, dolphin, and sailfish kept us busy.

AUG.17 REPORT LARGE SEA BASS / Posted by: Bobby Smith / 08/17/11
    North Carolina report 8-25-20.jpg

We landed a nice class of seabass for Tad Soderberg & his crew this afternoon. We began our allday trip livebaiting for the amberjacks but had no luck at all. We then put out the trolling gear, looking for a dolphin bite.We landed a couple of small blackfin tuna, but that was about it.

We finished up doing some light tackle wreckfishing & things turned around a bit for us. Several really nice seabass were landed along with a bunch of normal sized fish.We also had a bonus ling cod.

Not a banner day but we ended up with some meat for the table. Thanks again guys.Tad we'll see you again on Friday. Thanks,Bobby
