North Carolina Irene reports
8/29/2011
Okay so we are still here. We lost our DSL early in the storm and I couldn't hold service with verizon and then we lost power yesterday for hourse...I guess they turned us off to work on the grid and it popped back on last night right when it was time for bed and AC!
The yard is a nightmare, Billy's barn got a good washing and BC says he has never had water downstairs in his house - even in the storm of the century - and Saturday night he had 18 inches. What a mess. Kate lost one of her chickens and the Fishing Center is a mess...puilings are in place but the docks are gone and the Tuna fever is high and dry up in Manteo! Love it!! Tight Lines!

Here we are - have clocked 57 mph overnight and only just ;lost the tv with a power surge! Not too bad so far. Capt BC can see the Tuna fever from his kitchen and although the water has sucked out of the canal she seems to be okay. The family is still hunkered down and I will be updating the facebook page when I can. Tight Lines!

We have done all we can to prepare
for Hurricane Irene. We decided not to fish the second day of the VB billfish tournament so we could make preparations for this big storm. The boat has been hauled out in a boatyard in Wanchese. Please wish us and all the other boats there good luck. A generator is in place to keep our bait freezers running in the event of prolonged power outage. Many of the local captains, crews, and families are planning to stick out the storm here on the Outer Banks. Others, who a probably smarter, heeded the evacuation warnings. Good luck to everyone in the path of Irene.
Survived
The back side of the storm was much more damaging than the leading edge. 3 feet of water rushed into the garage under my house in Manteo. Only lost one bait freezer. The boat was on blocks in wanchese. If the water had risen another foot she would have floated off the jacks. We were lucky. The inlet is fine. The boat will be launched Tuesday but our dock at the fishing center is a mess. Will update later. No power. Posted by iphone. Road to Hatteras has been washed out near Avon.

The Point Runner will be docked at Pirate's Cove Marina in Manteo while Oregon Inlest Fishing Center in being repaired. Will give reports as often as we can.

Still Here! / Posted by: Capt. Kenneth / 08/28/11
Irene is gone and we are still here. The best I can tell the wind damage was minimal. We were fortunate enough that we never lost power during the storm. The back side of the hurricane brought all the water back and it sounds like the tide was as high as anybody has seen. Not good for anyone in the areas that normally flood. Most of the night was spent thinking the tide got high enough to float all the boats off the stands at the boat yard. The news was better this morning. We still have not been to the boat yard because of water on the roads but Cliff called and said none of the boats have moved off the stands. Good news. Still do not know how much damage was caused to Oregon Inlet Fishing Center but we will find out later today. Thanks for checking on us!

We are sure glad that one is gone! We knew she wasn't gonna be a wind issue, but we were major concerned about the water. Our fears were realized when we had more flooding than we have had in a very long time, and some areas had historical flooding. We haven't been able to get to the boat, yet, but a couple sets of eyes have seen her, and say the "DOGHOUSE" rode the storm out fine. The water has gone enough now that I will make my way here in a minute. Thanks for the thoughts, and prayers- they are the most important- now it's clean-up time. We'll keep you posted. Shack

Thanks to everyone who has called to check on us. We are all fine and for the immediate and foreseeable future the Pelican will be fishing out of Pirates Cove Marina (web cam link) which is located here on Virginia Dare Trail west of Whalebone Junction Information Center on Rt. 64. Unfortunately Oregon Inlet Fishing Center finger piers and docks suffered considerable sound side flood damage and will have limited access for awhile. As you can imagine land line/internet communications are hit and miss, so if you have any immediate questions please call Arch on his cell phone at 252- 216-7071. Otherwise email us at Arch@fishthepelican.com The Pelican will be fishing starting Tuesday.
We consider ourselves lucky as the worst of it for us was the landing platform on our dock floating off. Arch found it a few blocks away and dragged it back with the truck, made easier by the coating of sand left from the high water. Our garden is toast.
