FISHING REPORT 8-31-11
by Affie
What a beautiful day. Work is happening here at Oregon Inlet. Watch our real time camera as we put the fishing center back together. Several charters went out today. 2 of the boats went out for White Marlin and had a great day with 4 releases on one boat and 5 releases on the other. One charter went out meat fishing and came back with some yellowfin tuna and dolphin. More fishing news as our guys report in to us.

Report from our charter capts today is water color toward Ocean Crest looks very good, much better than off shore where still green/milky. Beach front full of mullets, pogies showing back up, glass minnows being ravaged by bonito.....what does that tell you?

The key to getting the fish to start to biting is to get the water color right. Its a little messy following storm, but nearly as bad as some of previous storms. The inside waters are somewhat muddy, but canals full of bait. Water should be getting better and better on every tide and with amount of bait in water, bite should kick off soon with a vengence. Offshore, water still milky which is not good, however with a northeast breeze, that wind direction very favorable to clear water up quicker. We have a charter out 20+ miles today so should have a good report this evening.

Just checking in. The Tuna Fever is all settled in over at Pirate's Cove Marina and Maxwell is pretty happy to have a home. I can't remember which electric company is already down at the Fishing center pulling new lines and they ordered 27 new poer pedestals the other day which should be there soon if not already. Should not be too long at all before we are back down the road in our comfy old dock:-)
At home Maxwell has freaked me out about snakes in the yard so I wear my high boots when I go out and I finally called my buddy Jay at Jay's tractor service to come out next week and clean up the mess in the yard...we are totally cosmetic so it can all wait but the fire ants are bad enough and I would definately freak if I kicked over a board and found a snake..especially the kind that swims!
We did get cancelled for this Saturday so if you want to get away from your snakes I know they can't swim to the Gulf Stream! Bert and Billy are back in the blue tomrrow...stand by for a fishing report!!!
Lastly much love and many prayers are going out to Mike Worley "The Worm" who has fallen ill out in San Diego. The Worm spent his carrer ensuring our freedom in the Navy and after all those years at sea he proved to be one hell of a fisherman too! We are thinking of you!! Tight Lines!

9-1-11 tuna and mahi
Ran our first trip out of Pirate's Cove today as repairs got started at OI Fishing Center. NE winds made the seas too rough for us to target white marlin so we changed up and went to the Point looking for tuna. We found a bucket floating in a grass line and caught half a limit of mahi. Then worked down to the 560 line where a few tuna had been caught. We got lucky and hit schools of tuna three times and held on to 15 of them up to 55 pounders.
Thanks to our mostly Northern Neck Virginia friends for fishing with us today. Bryan and Garrett Oliff, Keith Robertson, Curtis Catron, Danny Green, and Ronnie Smith.

After the Storm!
Oregon Inlet Fishing Center took the brunt of the storm. Docks, power supply, and fuel were all affected and the marina will be down for a little while. We are currently tied up at Pirates Cove Marina and will be moving back when the repairs are complete. Rebuilding has began and we are hoping for a speedy recovery. Thanks to the Pirate's Cove gang for letting us keep fishing during the recovery.

As you can tell it will be a little while getting things back together. Just give us a call before your trip and I can get you to Pirate's Cove. Good Luck to the crews working to put Oregon Inlet back together and thanks!

Made our first trip after the storm yesterday and things started where they left off. This is a photo from the 8-24-11 trip that I thought was cool with the sun in the back ground. We had similar sights yesterday. Four for seven on the white marlin. A couple of boats went to the south and had good catches of tuna and dolphin. We have had a couple of cancelations due to travel problems from the storm. Next week we have Tuesday and Wednesday available. Starting after the 12th we have more availability. Thanks for sending the photo Mark and I will get others up!
September got off to a good start yesterday. Our guys were hoping to do a little marlin fishing on the two day trip but the NE wind had us taking a different course in the morning. Variety with the catch including a little bit of everyting. The day started with a nice wahoo and yellowfin. We found a limit of dolphin along the hot water change and the tuna made a good showing in the afternoon. We caught five more nice yellowfins in the last couple of hours. Quality bites with the wahoo weighing 45 pounds and the yellowfins averaging better then 50 pounds. The meat fishing has been good the last couple of weeks and shows what the month of September has to offer as the boat traffic starts to slow. Today we are hoping for better weather and will be going up into the NE looking for white marlin. We have two days open next week if you would like to get in on the action. Thanks!

Just to let everyone know. We survived Irene with no damage to House, boat, or property except for a few limbs and trees down. Power just came on this morning and we hope stays on. As you know Highway 12 in Pea Island is destroyed in three or four places and one is an inlet to the sound. I have not heard any estimates as to how long it will take to fix. I know they have started ferry service from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe but only for emergence supplies and personnel so far. I heard they will start letting land owners only on ferry tomorrow. Cell phones are not working here yet but my house phone is working 252 986 1031. If you have a charter set up please call and we will try to work out something. I may take my boat up to Manteo area to run my trips if possible. I thank everyone for the calls and emails and hopefully I can go fishing soon.
Today's Report

We now have power and cell service in Hatteras so things are good here. The bad news is we have no road or access. I am planning on taking the Release up the sound to the Manteo area to run some of my trips. I am hoping my fishing friends will be able to possibly relocate their vacations up there somewhere. The realty companies are on top of this. I am not sure when access will be for visitors but they are not even letting residents back yet. Will try to keep you posted.

09-01-2011: Capt. Joe's now has a new page on the web-site. "Capt's comments and Events". .WE have now gotten a new fishing report. There were a few boats that went offshore over the last day or so and the fishing for dolphin and wahoo was still very good. You have to go our around the Big Rock area before you got to cleaner water , but the fishing was still very good. Along the beaches the bait is everywhere and the false albacore have started showing up in pretty good numbers. The Spanish mackerel were not present, but they can show up at any time. The old red drum fishing in the Pamlico Sound is still very good and should continue to be good for the month of September.

We almost got the well deserved rain from Irene, but no; still need some water in the rivers. Water levels are LOW, and fishing has been tough, but not impossible. Wade slow, and stay out of the slick pools.
Fish pocket waters" moving water": Red Fox Squirell, Copper Jon red and green, Birds Nest, Red ***, Zebra Midges blk, red and copper.
Dries: Stay with Caddis and Yellow Sallies for attractor dries, and switch to ants and beetles in the shade.
~~Due to warm weather, we are only guiding in the mornings. Also no unguided trips. Once the water cools down we will lift the anglng restriction. Thanks for your patience.~~
Smallmouth on the French Broad has been good due to lower water levels. Fish Crease Flies, Boogle Bugs in Chart, and Power Pumpkin. If they won't eat in top, twitch a Clouser or Wiggle Minnow through the shoals on an Intermediate line. "When Clear".

While the storm has made its mark on the OBX we are a resilient community. Our infrastructure is sound and repairs are well underway. Access to the ocean and the main populated portion of the barrier Island is intact. Accommodations improve daily as we recover from Irene. The late summer and fall is a beautiful time of year and offers some of the most pleasant weather and exciting fishing on the east coast. As the Oregon Inlet fleet relocates and settles in Arch, Lee and the Pelican, now based at Pirates Cove, ventured out today. After a long run to find the right water they raised 5 White Marlin and released 3. Take that Irene!
Five out of 10 whites Bill Degraw and his crew have no complaints even with a little sea. Call Arch at 252-216-7071 and get it on.

Postby Captain Jay Kavanagh » Wed Aug 31, 2011 1:02 pm
We are OK.
Boat is fine, people are fine.
North of Rodanthe is a mess, so getting here is a problem right now.
We still don't have internet at home, I am over at Jeremey's and Christinia's internet cafe.
We are ready to roll again as soon as they fix the road for us.
Thanks for all of your phone calls, emails and general well wishes.
Hope fully we will be back online at home soon!
We do have cell service now, and our home phone has worked continuously.
