august is tough, i would recommend somebody like Mark Dickson up in Little River for an inshore trip. Offshore is might slow that time of year.
Offshore can be good this time of year. Lots of sails caught lately along with kings, wahoo, and an occasional mahi. Friend of mine runs charter out of Little River/N.Myrtle. See link below.

Where'd I get that nugget? From fishing there the last two years and being friends with the guys that work at the OIFC. When charter captains have to resort to jack whacking, its kinda tough. There's some kings around, but they are few and far between, and there's some grouper around. Run to the stream and maybe catch a billfish thats your other option, but thats maybe 2 or three shots a day at most, with a good chance at none. Thats why I recommended an inshore trip, and Mark is one of the best, there's a couple other guys too but he's the one I remember because he and Brandon Sauls have won or placed in all the inshore tourny's in that area this year. If I'm down during vacation, I want to feel some pullage, not take a boat ride, and sight casting reds and/or taking some flounder and trout home to eat is what I would do.
Sails are thick out of Little River Inlet this time of the year. Yes the offshore bite is slow right now but the wahoo bite could go off any day now. My notes show the second week of August always good on wahoo.
Bottom fishing is still good also. Longshot charters is one of the best and the ride is like no other. 36 ft yellowfin with triple 350's will get you there in a hurry. Ex commercial fisherman that will put you on the fish.
Inshore, Mark Dickson or Patrick Smiley knows the where the fish hide. Either would be an excellent choice with nice rides to boot.
i still stand by my statement. Sailfish being "thick" is relative....thick in SE NC/Upper Coast SC meaning you've got a chance at 1-5 fish. Thick to me is south florida in winter thick, which means a realistic shot at a double digit day. Aren't gonna find that off LR or Murrells. August is the worst fishing month of the year in SE NC and upper coast of SC. April/May and September both have world class wahoo fishing, May and June both have amazing dolphin fisheries, and June/July and october are epic king mackerely bites. The king bite at the Jungle in late june/early july is comparable to almost anywhere.
I guess thick is relative to what you are used to. I normally fish out of Little River Inlet almost once a week year round, cause I live here. 1 to 5 sailfish is pretty thick to me since we dont see to many at other times of the year.
I cant compare Florida's sailfish bite to this one but from what I understand of the MegaDock tourney out of Charleston a couple weeks ago had its best to date. 150 + billfish releases. Thats compareable to about anywhere? Some compare it with Florida at times. I dont fish florida much anymore.
So I stand by original statement of thick. So what Im seeing is thick to me. And youre right about Brandon and Mark...they know where the fish are! But then again they live here too.![]()
Like I said i fish out of Ocean Isle, I mated for a mutual acquaintance last spring out of little river, he ran a 31' yellowfin and still owes me money, i understand you have had a run in or two with him also. So I know what I'm talking about a little bit. I lived in Ocean Isle all summer in '07, we have a lot of mutual acquaintances even though i don't think we've met.
Thats what I mean about thick being relative. All I'm saying is that since we are recommending a guy to take a charter, we should recommend the thing where he's most likely to catch quite a few fish. We all know there's sails out there, and blues and bottom fishing ain't too bad and there's a few dolphin/kings/wahoo around. But i'm just saying to get the most bang for his buck i would recommend an inshore trip at that time of year. Personally I want to leave about 11, troll the afternoon away then swordfish all night, troll the next morning till about 11 and then come to the hill. But I'm not down on vacation, I get to go a little more often![]()

oh, and Longshot is a helluva nice fishing machine. Was behind them at the weigh in for the Got-Em On a couple weeks ago. ( I beat them by a pound and a half haha)
