I plan to do spend most of September & October fishing offshore, weather permitting, of course.

Basically, it is a great opportunity to do some hands-on, world class fishing for the cost of bait, fuel & ice with a licensed Captain with 20+ years experience fishing the offshore grounds in North Carolina; not to mention an opportunity to make some new friends.

The boat is reasonably fast sporting twin 650 HP 8V92's, air conditioning, a full complement of modern electronics & safety gear.

Also, she is fully equipped with IGFA legal 30 and 50 pound class gear.

For additional information, feel free to give me a shout at 215-679-4620 (office) or 215-679-3311 (cell).

I have been fishing out of Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Inlet for 15 years and have never heard of you or your boat. I seriously doubt you have 20+ years of fishing experiance off of North Carolina. Sounds like you are just a retired doctor or somthing that is just playing around.

I started fishing in the surf in Hatteras in 1969 when I lived on Topsail Island during my last 6 months in the Marine Corps.

In the mid 70's I started trailering a 24' Sea Ray down and ran out of both Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Inlet until the late 90's when I could afford to step up to a 37' Pacemaker (also named the Tempest) which I ran from 1998 to 2001 out of Hatteras Landing. You can check on that with Billy Webster or Elson Myers if you wish.

The 2001 recession ate me alive and I had to let the boat go.

I haven't been able to afford to get back until recently when my fortunes changed and I found myself in a position to pick up the Bertram.

That's pretty much the quick bullet.

Alex-
Surf fishing dosen't count as offshore fishing experiance. Other than that it sounds like you have as much experiance accually "offshore" fishing as a hearty weekend warrior at best. I woulden't trust you with a carolina skiff in the sound. In you side bar you say you location is Hatteras NC and you say your home port is Hatteras NC but you don't live here, just another wannabe.

You've about got it right.

The business I run did allow me to come down for periods periods of 10 days to 2 weeks during the season when I ran the 24 footer offshore. And with the 37' Pacemaker, I'd go down for 10 days and then head back home for 10 days during the season. Although, I did keep that boat in the water year round and managed a few trips in the winter.

You're also right about my being a "wannabe". I'd move down there in a heartbeat, but I made the mistake of buying a log home on some property in Southeastern PA 20 years ago and my wife loves it there.

Then again, she did ask me to look into picking up a 2nd home in the Hatteras area for the winter time.

Side note: She's the one with the money, not me. I'm floating this venture out of my retirement fund.

Let me be clear, I don't claim to have anywhere near the expertise and capability of you full-time boys even though I've got a Master's ticket.

I can't hold a candle to the likes of Rom or Jim, etc. etc. and I'll readily admit that. Heck, even a youngster like Joe Seegers has forgoten more than I know about fishin' offshore. BTW, I was sorry to learn he left Hatteras and is now otherwise engaged in the Wilmington area. He's a heck of a good guy.

EDIT: FWIW, I did run boats for owners out to the Jersey Canyons during many summers to keep up my limited skills, but I know that doesn't count as Hatteras fishin'.

Gentlemen,
I can vouch for Alex's honesty and integrity. I've know him since his Marine Corps days, and he is a Vietnam veteran, and quite honestly, I'm shocked that not one person (thus far that I've read) has thanked him for his service to our country.

Where as I can see some of the points made by the local fisherman, I don't agree with them wholly. There are people out there who would love to charter but can't afford the going rates. Giving those people an option where they can is good for the other local businesses, like motels, diners, retail etc. Those people will be helping out that part of the local economy. I would like to think that some business is better then no business, and in the long run everyone would benefit.

As a first time poster, i hope you are real and will assume you are a friend of his.

What the F is up with everybody. The guy obviously has no friends around hatteras and just wants to go fishing. I just happens that he is more fortunate than a lot of people and has a bigger boat. I meet people at local fishing clubs, online through boards like this and at tournaments, etc... So the guy wants to have some people that want to go fishing and share expenses. If that's what he wants to do let him. not like he is going to be fishing a whole lot as a fair weather fisherman this time of year. he has not said he is a top notch captain and hasn't mentioned having a mate or anything. not like he is any different that any other set of buddies getting together to go fishing and share expenses accept he has a bigger boat. Boy because he has to rent a slip and not bring a boat in by trailer, he must be a charter boat. BULL. Boy do i wish i could get out on a bigger boat every once and a while, but i can't afford to even do a makeup charter anymore down there let alone Oregon Inlet once a year. You are talking $300.00 plus a person for a trip and more if you want fish cleaning services. Give the old vet a break. If he is really trying to run a business then he will get caught and forced out, but he is doing what he says lay off. Sorry for the unfortunate circumstance in the OBX economy, but a weekened warrier that is barely there is not going to change or affect your livelyhood.

Alex, thanks for your service to this counrty and send me a board message if you have a spot needed to be filled. I am a 30 trying to start a family, don't have to money to charter, but do have friends and fish regularly offshore from hatteras to the washignton canyon. BTW are you including yourself in the split expenses as mentioned above or is it split between the crew that comes with you. That might shut a lot of people up if you state exactly what is to be split and if your are included (ie. bait, ice, fuel, lost rigs). I have a lot of family down south and would enjoy doing some fishing down there when visiting. However, if you are looking for a charter don't advertise as fun fishing. If you are not including yourself in the split fees, i have other friends that have boats to fish with but thanks for the offer.

Yup, jscot is an old friend of mine who has fished with me in the past. He also happens to be my kid brother. I'd sent him a link to the thread as an FYI.

Obviously, he felt his older brother needed a little support.

Actually, he spent a week in Hatteras with me some years back. Unfortunately, the weather and fishing didn't cooperate very well.

I've been PM'ing people about the costs as I got a couple of intial complaints about my stating them on a forum. I edited the info out of the posts early on to try and get along.

To answer your general question, to date my crews have been happy to split the expenses between themselves. I presume they figure the cost of the boat payments, marina fees, insurance & maintenance were sufficient as my share. That said, I'd be happy to pony up a percentage of the day's cost for any crew that felt that would be appropriate.
