Hatteras Jack fishing report Rodanthe 7-18
JULY HOT SPOT!! Sound fishing has been awesome and all the most sought after species have been reeled in daily. From speckled trout, to keeper flounder and yearling drum, you can get hooked up. Bluefish and Spanish mackerel have also been consistent. If you’re looking for a good show, gar (sound marlin) have also been caught. These hard fighting fish will steal your tackle, but if you hook up, they’ll put on a great show. Be careful, they‘re mean when you get em in.
Hatteras Inlet has been a good spot for fishing, but clamming is also productive.
There have also been plenty of clams harvested around Oregon Inlet. Sheepshead are still a good bet around the pilings of the Bonner Bridge, as well as some flounder, bluefish and Spanish mackerel.
Small cobia have been found around Ocracoke.
Striped bass have been caught at Oregon Inlet around the bridge. In the ocean, you can keep two per day in the ocean at 28 total legnth, but the sound is closed. The bridge is the line and the east side is defined as the ocean, and keeping stripers is legal. The west side of the bridge is the Albemarle Sound Management Area, which is currently closed. Fish the east side.
In the surf, the east winds cleaned things up on Sunday, but the southwest winds were predicted for this week. This means bottom fish will be caught on northern Hatteras beaches and the pompano should show back up on beaches south of Cape Point. There’s been some big pompano landed in the surf on south beaches and I’m predicting it will get better with the wind switch. Sea mullet have been landed across the board.
Offshore, the fleet has been catching plenty of dolphin, with a few wahoo mixed in. white marlin and sailfish release flags have been flying down at the docks.
