Hatteras Hot Bluefin Bite - Seeking Crew!

Greetings all!

As many, if not most of you are well aware, there are good numbers of bluefin offshore of Hatteras that are cooperating on trolled baits as well as jigging/popping.

On our last trip, the weather only let us do 1 and 1/8 trips of 4 scheduled. The first day we gave it a try we left the dock with the wind blowing less than 10 knots; however, 15 minutes before we put the lines in it was blowin' a steady 19 and gusting higher.

We fished for an hour in 4-6 footers with a close period and with 2 crew very green at the gills we headed for the barn after picking up a few Fat Alberts.

The 2nd day was as nice a day as you can ask for offshore of Hatteras in winter and we manged two small bluefin in the 60 - 80 pound range, keeping one for the table an releasing the other.

I hung around for another 4 days hoping the forecast would change, but wound up bagging the last two trips.

During that period a few of the local professional charter boats braved some tough conditions and were rewarded with the appearance of a much larger class of fish many of which were upwards of 73 inches and 200+ pounds with reports of 300 & 400+ pounders.

The long term marine forecast suggests that Wednesday, 3/2 will be the first decent day. Thus, I'm planning to fish as many days as possible from 3/2 through 3/13.

I really should break out the camera more often. Unfortunately, that thought is rarely close to the top of my priority list.

Unfortunately, the wind has prompted us to cancel trips for Friday, 3/4 & Saturday 3/5 with what promised to be two great crews.

The forecast suggests that Wednesday, 3/9 will be the first pretty day with Tuesday 3/8 as a possibility depending upon how quickly the weather system moves through.

As of this writing we have spots available as follows:

3/8 – wide open
3/9 – 4 spots
3/10 – 5 spots
3/11 – 5 spots
3/12 – 3 spots
3/13 – wide open

The Hatteras charter fleet has been tearing them up for the last few days. While Wednesday's weather was decent, the fishing has been good enough to lure some of them out both yesterday & today in pretty snotty seas to include good numbers that went 70+ inches.

They are definitely starting to move up the creek, so if you’re interested in getting in on the bluefin action before they disappear please give me a shout at your earliest convenience.
