While I have just a fraction of the experience some of the folks on this board have. I will give my insight from the past 2 seasons down there.
December and january. Horse Ballyhoo behind island lures. Any color is good, so long as it is pink 130 class rods and reels, 180 to 220 pound leader. 3 or 4 rods. 2 riggers, a deep rod, and maybe a flat line. I like a 12/0 Tuna bend style hook (7692 Mustad I think) heavy drag, 30 to 60 pounds depending on what you are comfortable with. I fight the fish from a swivel rod holder, and when they settle in after the first run, I go from 30 pounds of drag up to 40+ pounds. If the fish is hugging the bottom I bump it up to 50+ pounds. Fishing is anywhere from just a few miles to 20 plus miles. Depends on where the bait is. Some good spots are the Trawler Buoy, Big 10, Little 10 and really any of the Wrecks (Shad Boat, Atlas etc.) I'm sure some others will chime in.

I use a planer on 70 to 80 feet of handline with a rubber band release. There are plenty on this board with more sophisticated methods, I am just not quite so fancy. Will be at the MHC Yacht Basin. Last Call. Stop by.

They have been getting later and later every year I hear. Used to be great the first week in Dec. I've heard some people use 50's standup, with lots of backing of course.
