FISHING REPORT OI 10/22/09

Took the New boat fun fishing yesterday for the first time since our charter season slowed down and Had a pretty good day, the sea were flat calm and there was a fall chill in the air. Started fishing a little north of the point in 81 degree blue water around a lot of pilot whales, we had our first short rigger bite not soon after we put our lines in the water. #30 yft. Not much bait in the water but hundreds of Pilot whales. I decide to stick it out for a little bit around the whales and managed to put 4 more yft and a black fin in the boat over the next two hours. I got a call on the radio from one of the local captains letting me know the was a bite going on around the point and to get there pretty quick if i was close enough to do so. I quickly got everything in and ran south. When we got there we saw pods of bait and crashing yft as far as we could see. What a sight. I told my crew get ready, because we are in the meat! We had everything back out came up to a school of busting fish and not a bite? This was repeated through the rest of the day. The fish were finicky and hard to get to bite, we did manage to get a few more yft and some black fins by the end of the day, but man it is frustrating to see all those fish without a sniff. We had to fish our baits way back half a spool or more and break out the spreader bars.
We had a great day and ended up with 10 tuna in all. Had a great crew and an enjoyable day out in the water. Looking to do it again some time next week when the weather settles in again.

Get yourself some popping rods. Next time you might be able to turn that into your most fun day of the year.

Pretty work.

Thanks for the tip. I did see some guys casting to them from the bows of there boat. I had a guy trying it but I think the top water plug was a little big.

For OI, the Silver Rebel PopR's with the blue back from whalebone is tough to beat. It has a red cup face.
