Inshore:Fall is officially right around the corner, and Charleston's inshore fishing is already showing just that. Great numbers of Redfish, especially smaller fish, are loaded throughout our local waters and have been absolutely fighting over who can get to a live shrimp the fastest amongst themselves. Best reports on the reds have been coming from submerged rock piles, deep holes under docks, and the mouths of feeder creeks as the tide begins to fall. Live shrimp have been the "no-fail" bait of choice, but the reds will almost certainly suck down a Gulp shrimp or DOA shrimp. Trout continue to be found in pretty good numbers, though a lot of smaller juvenile fish. DOA shrimp fished under a rattle float or live shrimp floated along submerged shell rakes will produce solid numbers for you right now. As water temps cool over the next few weeks, we will see a major transition into using artificials instead of live baits...Meaning don't get caught short on your inshore artificials and stock up now! Surf fishing has also picked up, with good reports of Bull Reds in the surf as well as some good sized black drum Tarpon season is hitting it's pinnacle right now as the mullet run is just days from beginning. Sheepshead have been kind of hit and miss with a lot of small 2-4pound fish being found around bridge pilings. Flounder have still been in a nice upswing from recent years, with best reports coming from inlets using live mullet, minnows, and Gulp jerkshads for best success.
Offshore:Capt Brad aboard "Game Day Charters" fished just a few days ago and reported back to me that they caught 3 nice wahoo and 2 sails, and saw several more sails that they could not get hooked up that day. Best wahoo reports have come in from 130-250ft and the sails from 250-400ft, though this can change almost daily. Bottom fishing continues to pick up at a pretty good rate, with reports of some nice Vermillions coming from Comanche/Y-73 area as well as plenty of Sea Bass and a few Grouper. King Mackerel have been a little bit slower than typical for the time of year, but the best reports on the kings has been out deeper in 85-110ft of water.
