Extreme Measures Drum Fishing 8/18
Capt. Brian picked up my dad and I in Oriental this morning and we headed off to a few drum spots.
Another guide had landed two already, so we set up on the big ones. It didn't take long before the Mullet and Shad chunks produced some bites. We had a few misses and drops, but landed and released 3 nice drum in the 20-30lb range. For a change of pace we headed to a different spot to try for some pups and sure enough, we caught our share of them from 12-20". My dad was able to catch his first giant and pup in the same day, and we finished the night with 4 more great fish up to 40ish lbs before we convinced Brian we had to get back to the harbor before the restaurant closed. The man just doesn't want to stop fishing. Oh yeah, one of the first bigguns had a tag on it. These fish are definitely a formidable foe and I can only imagine what it's like when you can hardly keep a bait in the water. I'll be booking my big drum days for 2009 tomorrow!! -D

Nice work gents, I can hear the males thumping from here. Love the close up pics. You can almost smell the bait funk from here.

Do you take the tags and turn them in?
And that military boat looked like death on the move. |

Wonderful pictures and report Dave. Glad you and your dad had a good day on the river. Never would expect differently on the extreme boat.

Great report Dave. Capt. Brian is the authority on those giant drum. I may have to book another trip soon since I didn't get a turn at reeling one in a few weeks ago! Great pictures and some beautiful fish.

The tag will be turned in along with the stats of the fish to the NC marine fisheries folks.
Capt. Brian is definitely and authority on those big old fish. Last year he set the river record with 79 fish in one day with ONE ANGLER!! It was August 28th or 29th if I recall correctly.Of the 1256 fish he caught and released last year approx 300 of them were tagged. Glad you all enjoyed the pics, I enjoyed taking them! ![]() ![]() -D
