Fishing Report 11-2-11

Thanks to the last two windy cold fronts, the leaves are finally almost all out of the river, which will make fishing a lot better. Fishing is very good at the moment, especially for the lower water levels. Low and clear means far and fine for terminal tackle (think 9-foot leaders and 6 or 7X tippet) on the trout, who are a little spooky this time of year.

I fished with David, Andrew and Gonzalo on the East fork for a couple of hours last week - mainly to let the boys fish and they caught plenty. We used 6X tippet and size 16 Peacock Soft Hackles. Jeff Furman and I guided the Renova Group, and while everyone in the group caught fish, Kim Martin had to one up all the guys. On her first ever fly fishing trip, under the tutelage of guide Jeff Furman, she, landed a beautiful 24-inch Brown trout out of the Davidson.

The Davidson has had BWO's and a few Caddis coming off. Walker had a good trip on the Davidson this morning, with his client fishing parachute BWO's on 6X tippet and a 9-foot leader. caught fish,

Gonzalo and I snuck in a late year Smallmouth float yesterday. The fishing was spectacular from 11am until about 4pm. The fishing slowed soon as the water cooled downa nd the shade same on. Clousers on a type III sull sink line were the ticket.

Davidson River: BWO's on top, size 16-20; Soft Hackle Pheasant Tails, size 14-20; Olive Soft Hackles, size 16-20. You will have to fish 6X or 7X tippet and at least a 9-foot leader.

Davidson Trophy Water: BWO's on top size, 16-20; Soft Hackle Pheasant Tails, size 14-20; Olive Soft Hackles, size 16-20; Sheepflies, size 10-12; Rubber Leg Hares Ear and Rubber Leg Red Fox Squirrel Nymphs, size 14-18. You will have to use 6X tippet and a 9-foot leader for best results.

Delayed Harvest: All Streams will get a restocking this week - so any type of junk food flies like sucker spawn, eggs, Y2k's, San Juan Worms, or Squirmy Wormies will work. As long as you have enough weight to get the fly down and 4-6x tippet, you will catch fish.

Blue Lines: Have not heard many reports of people blue lining mainly because of all the leaves that were in the water last week.

Smallmouth: The Bass fishing is still prett goodon the warmer days. The bass have pulled out of the riffles, and are in the pools in more of a winter pattern. However, sinking lines and Clouser's fished slow and low will get the job done.
