Inshore:Redfish continue to be a staple(and readily available) for the lowcountry fisherman right now, being found on flats in smaller schools, under docks, and along rock piles. Live shrimp, mud minnows, crab, cut mullet, and many artfiicials such as Gulp! shrimp and ZMAN chatterbaits are all solid baits of choice for the reds. Just spoke with Capt Mike Waller from Kiawah, and he reported back from yesterday the first catches of bonnethead sharks this year. Capt Mike also reported some very nice sheepshead and black drum being found on the nearshore reefs. Trout have still been spotty, with best numbers being caught on live shrimp and DOA shrimp along shell rakes and the jetties in 4-7ft of water. Flounder have begun showing up in our inlets, and sheepshead and can still also be found inshore around heavy structure, eagerly awaiting a fiddler crab.
Offshore:A few days of weather window has allowed us to get in some more reports from the offshore trolling side recently. Capt. Bobby aboard "Daymaker" charters fished up north near Georgetown hole a few days ago and reported back a nice catch of blackfin tuna, with several being around or above 30#'s. Also had several reports of some small to mid sized dolphin being caught so far, along with a couple nice wahoo, but no big numbers as of yet. In typical spring fashion, the gulfstream is constantly shifting in and out and there has been no "set" area everyone is running to Key into temperature breaks, weedlines, and current rips (these usually run hand-in-hand) for best success early in the season.
