Inshore:Fall is definately falling upon the lowcountry. Water temps inshore have dropped down into the mid to low 70's with the previous cold front that moved through, and the fish defiantely know it. Trout have turned on good lately, with lots of reports of 20-40 in trip being common. Though many of the trout are still juveniles, we are hearing more and more reports of some fish in the 16-20" range. DOA shrimp under a popping float and ZMAN's new 4" PaddlerZ have been without a doubt the soft baits of choice for the early fall trout. Reds continue to group up in better and better numbers lately, with some fantastic reports coming from up the Wando and Stono side. Live shrimp, mullet, Gulp!, and/or ZMAN jerkshads have all been solid bets for tangling into some fall reds. The large "breeder" reds are also staging in good numbers around the old Grillage area and the Jetties. Sheepshead reports are decent as well around local bridges and rock piles using fiddlers OR live shrimp. Shrimp baiting season has been showing some great signs after last years brutally cold winter, as we are hearing lots of full coolers coming from the harbor around the JI shoreline and crab bank.
Offshore:We want to extend a big congratulations to long time HPT west ashley customer Wes Covington for his record breaking Hogfish last week he caught on a recent trip that tipped the scales at a whopping 21.95#'s. In addition to the record hogfish, we are hearing some very good reports of grouper in water depths from 100-150ft of water using live pinfish and cigar minnows, as well as butterfly jigs. Good reports of triggers and vermillions have also been reported from 80-130ft of water. The few boats that have made the trip to the stream recently to troll have reported back solid numbers of sailfish in 250-450ft of water and still some wahoo holding in 140-200ft.
