Carolina charter boats, tackle shops and marina reports 9-17

    ISHING-REPORT-09-15-10
    by bill

Offshore boats enjoyed all kinds of great fishing. I counted 61 white marlin flags. Two boats had 12 a piece. There were excellent dolphin catches. The best for size I have seen this year. Blackfin tuna catches were outstanding. A few yellowfins were caught. A couple of wahoo were also caught. Inshore boats caught tailor bluefish and spanish mackerel. An open boat had some beautiful speckled trout. Another caught tailor bluefish and flounders. A third open boat on an all day trip caught tailor bluefish and amberjacks. Miss Oregon inlet caught flounders.

Offshore good dolphin catches, white marlin, and blackfin tuna. One boat caughtr six nice yellowfin tunas along with dolphin and blackfin tunas. the yellowfins are coming. A 582 pound blue marlin was brought in. There is a contest amongst mates as to the biggest marlin for the season. Awards for first second and third places. Mate Greg Feeley was ceremoniously tossed into the creek by his peers this being his first docked blue marlin. It is hard to appreciate without having done it, all that goes into this achievment. More information on the bluemarlin will be added tommorrow. Inshore boats caught tailor bluefish, spanish mackerel and false albacore. Open boats caught tailor bluefish, speckled trout and puppy drum in the morning, tailor bluefish and grey trout in the afternoon. One boat caught grey trout, flounders and big croakers in the afternoon. An all day trip caught amberjacks. Miss Oregon Inlet caught sea mullet, sheepshead and triggerfish

Ocean Isle Fishing Center Fiahing Report, Ocean Isle Beach, NC, 9-17-10

    "Susan Taylor's Sail" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/17/10

This week the Whites (Charlotte) the Houghs (Charlotte) and the Taylors (Jackson, NC) met up for their annual vacation at Ocean Isle Beach. The 1st day they loaded up Butch and Julie Hough's 31 ft Cape Horn for a days fishing. The seas were rough and no bait was too be found. They ended the day with 2 blue fish.. The 2nd day they went at it again, determined to at least catch a few Spanish. A few small pogies were located. They pulled Clark Spoons along the beach but the only bite they could drum up was false albacore. Day 3 was spent at the 90's but there was no action to be found. Day 4, small pogies were found. They fished the 90's with still no luck so they went to the 65 ft. Hole..Nothing!

The decision was made to venture to the Atlantic Ledge. They trolled with some cigar minnows and small pogies. After about an hour they decided to pack it up and head for the hill. That's when a sailfish exploded on a small pogie! Susan Taylor took the rod and fought the sail for an hour with a rod spooled with 20 lb test. The sail put on quite a show, skying and tail walking. When they got it to the boat, they removed the hook, taking pictures all the while. They were concerned about reviving the fish after it had put up such a long fight, so they quickly got him back in the water where he swam away to freedom. Susan hung with the fish the entire time and said by the time he got to the boat her legs were so week they were shaking.

Thanks to Sylvia White for the story and pictures. I couldn't upload the pictures in the format I received them so I had to mess around in order to use them. Because of that the enlarged picture suffers greatly in quality. As soon as we can reformat them I'll repost these 3 as well as some others.

    "Jeff's Vaction" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/17/10

Captain Jeff Williamson (Get Busy/OIFC) took a well deserved vacation after a busy summer charter fishing for the OIFC, to relax and....well...go fishing. The weather wasn't that great, but catching this sail fish more than made up for it.

The number of entries may sound a little small, but en light of the South Brunswick Islands King Tournament and many other local events going on over the weekend everyone was pleased with the number of participants.

    $100TWT

    1st: Ricky Evans 5.4 lbs

    2nd: Fred Davis 5.2 lbs

    3rd: Todd Jenkins 5.1

    4th: Bob Simmons 4.3

""And Action!"" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/16/10

In the store today...heard that the spanish are all over the beach, THICK! Now is the time to go early in the morning and locate a school in frenzy. Get out your gotcha plugs, topwater poppers, and casting spoons on light tackle to experience the incrediable speed these fish have to offer. I was planning on doing this myself in the morning, but have been invited for a full day offshore.

Offshore things have picked up a bit on the bottom. Capt. Steele and Capt. Jeff took a crew out bottomfishing in about 100 feet of water today. The crew brought back 18 Vermillon Snapper and 2 Grouper. The crew said they caught several more fish that were short and lived to see another day.

That is about all the action I have heard about offshore. Inshore the blues and mullet have taken over the water. A few flounder, red drum, and maybe a trout hanging tight somewhere. Cooler water is coming soon and should get everything biting again. Full moon is also right around the corner and should help get the fish active again. See ya on the water!

    "Galapagos- 2 Openings" | OIFC 1- 36' | 09/15/10

As announced last month, in February of 2011 the OIFC's Traveling Fisherman is headed south to the world famous Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. The Galapagos are known mostly for the incredible protected wildlife that inhabit the islands. However, in recent years offshore fishing has been opened up to a select few operators who found the sportfishing to be equally as impressive and prehistoric as anything seen on land. Striped marlin by the thousands gather in the fertile currents that surround the islands which offers a unique angling opportunity for fishermen and fisherwomen who are willing to travel around the world looking for the next great bite. The OIFC trip will depart the US on January 30th and return home on February 6th. During the 8 days abroad we will spend a couple days in Ecuador, 4 days fishing off the coast of the Galapagos, and a couple days taking in the sights on the islands. We have a great group already signed up for the expedition. Currently there are 14 fishermen and fisherwomen on board and we have room for 2 more. This is a great opportunity to travel to an incredible fishing destination with a group of fellow anglers with a common background as "OIFC Friends". With only 2 spaces available please contact me soon if you have interest in joining the team on this great adventure. Capt. Barrett McMullan- captbarrett@oifc.com

    "November Kingfish Tournament" | OIFC 1- 36' | 09/15/10

Start making plans now! For any of you king mackerel fishing enthusiasts out there who are disappointed SKA Nationals are not being held out of Biloxi this year FRET NOT! The kingfish bite in Biloxi over the past couple years has been epic to say the least, fortunately we have the next best thing right here in our own backyard off the Carolina Coast. November off the North Carolina coast in particular between Cape Lookout and Cape Hatteras shoals the king mackerel fishing is as good as anywhere in the world. Our objective with hosting this tournament was to give fishermen a reward for a tough summer of battling it out in the tournaments. This will be the third year for this event and if it's anything like last year the fishing will not disappoint. From my own personal experience last year in this event, we caught countless fish over 30lbs, half a dozen over 40lbs and 2 over 50lbs. That is one day of fishing on one boat! We are really hoping to grow this tournament as nothing in tournament fishing is more fun than being in a great bite amongst a big group of boats where everyone is catching monster kingfish and everyone has a shot at victory. In addition, this event has now changed names to the NC Kingfish Championship. The purpose of the name change is to create a new title in the kingfish world. This tournament will serve as a state championship at the end of each tournament season. The winner will be crowned, "NC State Champion". There is a "National Champion" title out there so we felt it necessary we crown a state champion. This is a very prestigous title that will certainly earn the title holder tremendous bragging rights within the state. The winner of this event in addition to the prize money will receive a trophy declaring their team as this years North Carolina State Champion. Please check out the tournaments page on our website for details about this event. I will continue to post updates about the event over the next couple months.

"OIFC Report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/15/10

Finally got a couple of pictures of our tournament winning King from this past weekend.

Ocean was beautiful yesterday. Went offshore and did some diving. Fish are starting to move in now, much more life on bottom than through most of Summer. Also could hear guys in Stream catching Wahoo and Dolphin.

    -Capt. Brant McMullan

"Steeples" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/15/10

Chris Cratz reported that he fished the Steeples yesterday using Black Barts. He started out trolling 15 mph and finally hooked up at 10 mph. They caught 2 wahoo in 3 1/2 hours, one weighing 27 lbs. and the other weighing a whopping 49 lbs.

They then went to the south west of the Tower and caught beliners, black bass, rock hinds and pinkies in 100 ft of water. Unfortunately most were undersized and were released.

Chris reported beautiful seas and a beautiful day.

    Thanks for the report Chris.

    -Capt. Rickey Beck

    "Georgia Boys" | OIFC 1- 36' | 09/14/10

A few days ago Captain Jeff Williamson took a group from Georgia on a charter. Of course Captain J. Dogg lost their names, but does remember that they were from Georgia. As you can tell by the background they were fishing mostly at the jetties. The Little River Jetties have been producing a great deal of reds lately. If your down anytime soon I'd give them a shot.

Captain Jeff is fishing in Paradise Cove this week and we'll have some pictures of his trip shortly.

Release Sport Fishing Report, Hatteras, NC, 9-17-10

    September 16, 2010

The seas started out a little bumpy in the morning but flattened out as the day went on. Bruce Gambordello and his crew did another great job on the dolphin and amberjacks.

    -------------------------------

    September 14, 2010

Today was another nice day on the ocean with a light west wind. I had the experienced crew of Bruce, Marilyn, Peter, and Katarina. They have offshore fished a bunch so they know what to do without me having to holler any (ha ha). We caught some nice dolphin, golden tilefish up to 50 lbs, amberjack, and some Rosey fish. They will be doing some good eating soon.

Ugly Duckling charters Fishing Report, Edisto Island, SC, 9-17-10

    Fishing Report - Sept, 14, 2010

Spottail bass (Red Drum) are picking up. Also catching plenty of Trout and a few Flounder. We had a cold weather kill off of Trout last winter, but they seem to be doing fine now.

Bottom fishing is excellent for Black Sea Bass, Trigger Fish, etc.

Sharks seem to be everywhere. Whiting are plentiful.

Freshwater Catfish are moving down into the South Edisto River.

    Company History

Captain Steve Fralin is a Master Captain licensed by the US Coast Guard and has been in business at Edisto for over 20 years.

Steve has lived at Edisto for 20 years, and knows the waters well.

He has also participated in many sea rescues. He thinks his Indian blood aids him in locating boats at sea.

Captain Dave Odom had been licensed by the Coast Guard for 11 years. He originally started fishing at Edisto when he chartered Capt. Steve in 1990.
