Offshore once again lots of variety in today's catches. Dolphin, Yellowfin and blackfin tuna, wahoos and billfish. Four of all the classic billfish. Four blue marlin, four white marlin and four saifish were caught and released. Calmer seas and better summertime fishing. In the first picture are Hannah and Lauren Eythisen, Brittney and David Morris all from Woodvine, Maryland. Inshore boats caught tailor bluefish, tile fish and amberjacks. One open boat caught cobias, amberjacks and spadefish. Another caught red drum and speckled trout. Miss Oregon Inlet caught croakers and flounders.
"Sailfish!!" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 07/23/10
Captains Chris Dawson and Jeff Williamson were joined on a charter today by Marie Irby (Monroe, N.C.), her sister, Ann Smithey, along with Jack and Hayden Smithey (Ruston, La.).
They started fishing at the Shark Hole and caught some small kings, then were invaded by sharks. From there they went to the 90's, with the same story so they headed to Christinas Ledge. They put out a frozen cigar minnow with a crystal Blue Water Candy skirt, and a short time later Marie was on the way to a 2 hr battle with a 6 ft. sailfish. Everyone said the sail put on a heck of a show, tail walking several times. Thankfully they took some great pictures and will be emailing them to me shortly. On Ann's last charter this past season she had a big king. This should be the kind of action that brings her back for more.
We're all looking forward to the pictures, especially with the upcoming Cape Fear Sailfish Classic only three weeks away.

"Fishing With Grandad" | Speckulator - 22' | 07/23/10
Captain Kyle Hughes was joined today by Grandad Jim Pridgen (Jamestown, N.C.) and his Grandsons, 14 yr old Lieph Grubbs and 5 yr old Eli Grubb (Lake Mary, Fla.) They fished the backwaters of OIB and Sunset Beach using mullet minnows. In addition to the flounder and drum in the photo they caught around 8 more, of which, a couple of over slot reds.
The group decided not to keep the drum. A crowd gathered as Captain Kyle carefully revived him for everyone to watch quickly escape to his freedom.

"Yesterday" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 07/23/10
Captain Chris Dew and Captain Chris Eckert fished yesterday with the Hunters, Gerald, Linda, Alex, and Kaylin of Woodleaf, N.C. The charter used frozen cigar minnows with blue and green skirts in 90 ft of water. They brought 4 kings and 2 NICE mahi to the docks. Our resident photographer was slacking, thus no pictures. The Hunters have promised Kaylin will send us some action shots next week when they get home.

In an earlier report I focused on 1st mate Austin Aycock's 1st charter. Now I would like to address 1st mate Aaron Dew. Aaron is the son of the OIFC's Captain Chris Dew. He has served very successfully as his dad's 1st mate for the past 2 seasons. We, at the OIFC have watched as Aaron has honed his skills and become a valuable asset to Captain Brant's Fishing Adventures.
1st mates, just as the charter captains arrive well before the charter, usually before sunrise to help prepare for the day's fishing. They work closely with the captain and customers during the long days, in all environments. What may be the end of the day for the angler is just the beginning for the captain and 1st mate. They have to clean fish, the boat, the tackle, and get ready to do it all over again.
This is one heck of a tough job with a lot of expectations. These 2 fine young men should be admired and commended for their work. They will someday be running boats of their own!
Went exploring tonight while the moon was overhead...looking for docks with lights on them...did not catch any fish under the lights...did manage to catch one in a dark creek...Air temperature was much more pleasant, but the water temperature was a hot 88 degrees! See ya on the water!

We needed to use our radar this morning through several miles of fog, but the Kinseys from MD, Shelly, Sarah, Taylor, John, Kris, and George enjoyed a calm day at sea. The fleet caught a mix of a some tuna, marlin, wahoo, and dolphin. A couple of tuna would place you among the fortunate. A few boats caught six or more. We missed our tuna bite but caught several bonito. We also lost a rig to a toothy wahoo, but fortunately another boat called us over to a piece of float where we made a good catch of mahi. Plus, they got a close look at a cruise ship returning from Burmuda. Thanks for checking in.

7-23-10 ...... FRIDAY ...... HOT & WINDY with TARPON STRIKES! ......
There sure is a lot of fishermen scratching their heads because of the lapse in reports, but if you have been reading this page for a while, you would know that when it's SLOW, it's SLOW! ............ there has been some activity on the end of the pier yesterday; it seems that there have been not only ONE, but THREE TARPON strikes in one day! ........... We heard that one was a C&R at 60 lbs, but didn't receive any information on it ........ We'll let you know if we find out! ...........Congratulations to SHEPHANIE NGUYEN (Raleigh, NC)--3 lb. 2 oz. SPANISH MACKEREL caught early week ............. Also, we are starting to see more SEA MULLET, SPOTS, and BLUEFISH being landed, so it's definitely getting better (although HOTTER!) .............. There is a great crowd of folks coming out at night; fishing is so much cooler in the evenings, and with an 81* water temperature, it's still the COOLEST place around! ............. For the record, Gail, our BEACHFRONT RV PARK Manager, told me last night that there is only one space left in the EAST park, so if you are looking, now is the time! ........... Stay tuned; the fishing looks like it's picking up (and so will the reports!) ............... See you soon! .................... MIKE STANLEY

Friday Fishing Report
Golly Zach - is that a Tarpon you just lost? - yup, sure is Speedo. There was a bunch of them at the Point last evening and a few rigs were lost to the Silver Beauties. Good reports today - Black Tips at the Point as I type this report along with some Bluefish and Spanish Macks. Decent catches of Sea Mullet, Spot, and Croakers and good catches of Trout in the Sound. Lots of Flounder reported from the Inlet with a few legals. All in all, a good day and tomorrow will be even better - Grumpy.
