North Carolina State Southern District Fishing Report 7-20-10
Southern District
For the week ending July 18
Ocean: Offshore, unfavorable weather conditions kept most boats from venturing offshore. Fishermen were catching scattered dolphins, along with some billfish. Those targeting grouper found success fishing at depths of around120 feet for scamp, red, and gag. Also, before the wind picked up, king mackerel fishing heated up on most ledges in the 60- to 80-foot range. Amberjacks, cobias, dolphins, gag grouper and some sailfish were also caught. Near-shore reefs off Brunswick County produced some nice flounder catches, along with some spadefish, when weather conditions were favorable.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Inshore, fishing slowed due to strong, gusty winds and thunderstorms. Flounder, drum, and trout catches fell off as did the number of people fishing. Flounder fishing in the Cape Fear River slowed with the muddy water conditions. The best flounder catches came from down south around the Southport/Bald Head Island area. Red drum and a few trout were landed by anglers fishing in these waters, as well. Sheepsheads and black drum are always an option this time of year at bridge pilings, docks, jetties and even oyster bars. Use fiddler crabs or mole crabs for bait.
Piers/Shore: Fishermen at area piers caught a mixed bag of fish typical for this time of year. Spot, croakers, sea mullet and a few pompano were hitting on shrimp and mole crabs. Anglers targeting sheepsheads and flounder had better luck over the past couple of weeks. There was a 12-pound tripletail caught off of an Oak Island pier. King mackerel fishing slowed with all the wind, but there were some fish caught earlier in the week as well as some tarpon hookups.

South west wind
Posted on Saturday, July 17, 2010 - 1:42 pm:
hi all,
the wind is blowing 25+mph out of the south west today..... the ocean water temp on shore is in the low 60's and is so muddy you can stand flowers up in it... so if you need a fishing fix tonight i would head to the sound side between avon and salvo.
we have been geting trout, blues and drum from shore in the evening's aand on through dark.
good luck!

JULY 19 A.M. COLD WATER - TAYLOR BLUES / Posted by: Bobby Smith / 07/19/10
We had another morning of cold water along the beach which crushed our chances of finding a productive spot for some wreckfishing for Mr. Joe Cuozzi & his pretty crew.
We trolled for awhile hoping to find a dumb spanish mackerel in the 57.7 degree water down the beach but it didn't happen. Then then ran to one of my favorite triggerfish spots but that just wasn't going to happen either. We headed back to the inlet to salvage our trip, with good action on the old faithful taylor blues. Thanks again folks,we enjoyed having you with us! Bobby

Monday Fishing Report
Good Evening! More clean water was at Hatteras Inlet. People did well on blue fish there this morning. At ramp 43 and 44 there were a lot of smaller sea mullet and a few large sting rays for the guys fishing with cut bait. Avon had more scattered reports of spot and sea mullet.

Sunday Fishing Report
The wind blew pretty hard out of the south west today but there was still some fish biting. Hatteras inlet had a flush of clean water bring in some spanish mackerel and blue fish this morning. There were also a few flounder caught down there. At ramps 43 and 44 there were a lot of sting rays. People were catching small sea mullet as well. Up in Avon I heard of scattered spot and sea mullet. I think the water is still cold up there.
