    North Carolina Fishing Report 7-13-10

    Central District
For the week ending July 11

Ocean: Offshore anglers experienced moderate to good results in most cases. They caught their limits of dolphins but with much less regularity than in previous weeks. Yellowfin tuna catches dropped off just a bit, but those that were caught weighed in excess of 40 pounds in most cases. Blackfin, bigeye, and skipjack tuna, along with wahoos, little tunny, Atlantic bonito and assorted billfish were caught in low to moderate amounts. Those fishing out of Ocracoke and Hatteras marinas continued to catch their share of bottom fish, including blueline tilefish, red and vermillion snapper, snowy and yellowedge groupers, barrelfish, blackbelly rosefish, and black seabass. Midrange anglers cought striped bass with increased regularity in a very concentrated area around eight miles offshore from Nags Head to Corolla. Red drum were mixed in on some occasions, in lesser amounts. Cobia catches improved once again with most caught around 4 to 5 miles offshore. Near-shore action was somewhat limited, but Spanish mackerel and bluefish catches continued to be very good in a few short-term, high-volume cases. Assorted other species were caught in low to moderate amounts.

Inlets/Bays/Sounds: Anglers continued to primarily target flounder and spotted seatrout. Success rates lessened considerably, with only a few undersized fish of both caught, except for in the Swan Quarter and Rose Bay areas where anglers found some nice spotted seatrout catches on a fairly consistent basis. Anglers at Oregon Inlet caught some very large sheepsheads and black drum, along with a few spadefish, near the bridge structure. A host of other species were caught in low amounts.

Piers/Shore: Anglers had similar results to that of the near-shore boaters, with very few exceptions. Bluefish and Spanish mackerel catches were good on a limited basis. Kingfish, croakers, spot, spadefish, pigfish, silver perch and black drum were caught consistently and filled coolers this previous week. Fishermen caught a mixed bag of other species in low amounts.

North Carolina State Southern District Fishing Report 7-13-10

    Southern District

For the week ending July 11

Ocean: Offshore, trolling along the break produced scattered catches of dolphin over the past couple of weeks, along with a good many sailfish releases. Bottom fishing in the 120-foot depth range produced catches of red, gag, and scamp groupers. A variety of grunts, porgy, snapper and amberjacks were also caught. King mackerel fisherman reported somewhat slow fishing. Most anglers fishing at depths of 60 to 80 feet caught a few kings along with some cobias, dolphin, and a few sailfish. There was a 56-pound king mackerel weighed in, along with another in the 45-pound range in a local tournament, but overall fishing for them was somewhat slow. Near-shore reefs produced some flounder, along with some spadefish weighing up to 9 pounds.

Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Inshore, most anglers targeted flounder with good results. The best catches continued to come out of the Cape Fear River and around the Sunset beach area. Anglers caught more and bigger flounder over the past two to three weeks, with fish weighing more than 5 pounds observed on a regular bases. Black drum and sheepsheads continued to be caught around bridge pilings, the ADM dock and the rock wall at Fort Fisher. Red drum were caught around the Little River rock jetties and throughout the area in the marshes and creeks. Speckled trout fishing has been off so far in this region, but the best catches are coming around the N.C. 172 bridge at New River and the creeks and bays behind Bald Head Island. Live shrimp fished under a cork has been the ticket, as well as fishing in the early morning hours.

Piers/Shore: Anglers caught a mixed bag of fish. Spot, sea mullet, black drum, and some pompano were caught by bottom fishermen. Anglers targeting sheepsheads and flounder had better luck with some nice fish observed of late. King mackerel fisherman had some luck on the Oak Island piers, with a dozen or so fish landed. Surf fishermen are catching a few blues, sea mullet and pompano.

Tuna Fever Sportfishing Fishing Report 7-13-10

    7/11/2010
And finally Kate and I drove through MD and VA to arrive safe at home in NC. Wow, what a trip! The Billies hosted the boys from Boeing today and of course Larry Bowden and Byron Green. They started off with some northwest wind and scattered grass off the change and fished south west to the 833 and 345. The break was 84 to 77 degrees and was filled with grass and jellyfish! The crew had 7 nice bailers and 2 gaffers (including one that tipped the scales at 32 pounds!!!) and thats when Dave Swain of High Return fame and Arch (of course of the Pelican) called to say they found some tunas. Well, those Boeing boys wanted red meat and even though we all know the important rule - NEVER LEAVE FISH TO FISH FISH - which comes in a tight second to the cardinal rule - LEAVE BEHIND, STAY BEHIND. - Maxwell left his fish and headed up to the birds and bonitas and by the time he got there what littloe bite there was was over and the crew hooked and boated one yellowfin in the 50 pound range. The the boats he left called to say they had worked up the change and found the dolphin there. Can win for losing:-) But we love him anyway and Byron got his tuna!!
We have some open days coming up this week - actually Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. maxwell has some boat maintenance to do but I know he would rather take you fishing...and especially you Phil Caulkey..call us at home lets go fishing! 252-473-1097 Tight Lines!

Day 2 of the Hatteras Grand Slam Tournament. Terry started us out first thing with a Sailfish at 8:09 am. By the end of the day we were still in 3rd place standings for the tournament. We also caught 1 blackfin tuna, some dolphin, and had some wahoo bites. Give Shane a call at 252-216-5908 or Odens dock to book a charter on Boss Lady.
