Please report all right whales sightings!

Capt Judy Fishing report , Savannah 12-5-201.bmp
Many years ago I took this picture of two whales making way! Unbelievable is about only word I can use to described the “seeing feeling” of a right whale!

The right whale has a distinctive blow. It’s V-shape, because they have tow blow-holds.

The right what is protected by federal regulations. It is illegal to approach a right whale with 500 yards. (50 CFR 224.03 (c)) Any vessels finding itself within 500 yards buffer zone created by a surfacing right must depart immediately at a safe, slow speed.

On December 4, 2010 while fishing at the artificial reef KC I saw the whale spotter plane flying over an area where we thought that we are seen the blow from a right whale.

To report I haled on VHF marine Radio channel 16 for “USCG Station Tybee” Or you can call 912 786 5440

Please report all sightings..so that this information can be broadcasted to other boaters to prevent collisions at sea with the whales!

Striped bass in the Savannah River

Inshore

Striped bass in the Savannah River and Ogeechee Rivers

From reports received it seems that the striped bass season has had a good start. It suggested to always fish early morning or late afternoon for these fish. The best bait could be anything from a mullet to menhaden to a mud minnow or live shrimp. Heck artificial will work too. This is one fish that loves cloudy, rainy, and windy conditions, but I have seen them bite at any time. Please check all regulations before going into the keeping mode!

Captain Rick Reynolds of Miss Judy Charters is holding a nice tagged and soon to be release red fish!

Inshore fishing for schooling red fish

During this time red fish are known for schooling up in same sizes. They are also known for feeding up and down a bank letting the food source be their guide. With all this being said, “It’s time to do a little fish watching for reds that are pushing water!” Once you find them you can simply observe or you can fish. If you fish I suggest using the smallest adjustable float that you can rig. The lighter the float the smaller the splash down!

Schooling Redfish, How To Find Them When You Can’t See Them

By Capt. Rick Reynolds of Miss Judy Charters

During the late fall or early winter, many species of fish school up and relocate. Speckled sea trout as well as Redfish are two species that do this.

I am not talking about in the middle of winter, where they hunt for shallow mud flats to warm up on, but right now. We are always in some sort of transition on the Georgia Coast, but from October to the end of December a major migration and shift in feeding patterns occurs.

They migrate for a number of reasons, but I think the primary reason is food. As the water temp in the sounds drop, the baitfishes move.

Since these redfish are moving, and they are not necessarily visible, then you are going to have to blind cast to find them. If you can find some structure that is going to confuse the baitfish, then that is a great place to start.

You do not have to wait for a certain tidal stage, but when you do find these fish, it would be a good idea to put the tidal stage in your logbook.

What I look for are areas of the coastline that have some outcrops of oyster mounds and maybe some thin grass sticking up. The channel of water that flows behind those outcrops is ideal places to set up. On an incoming tide fish shallow and right up in front of the mouth of that channel. Let the tide move your bait into that channel and you should hook up if they are there. You can also drift bait where the channel empties back into the main river on the down current side.

After high tide you can fish these same channels in reverse.

Capt Judy Fishing report , Savannah 12-5-205.bmp

In the picture above notice on the left where the water is flowing behind the front oyster mound and marsh grass. Also see where it empties back into the river. Redfish will stage in those channels as well as right up against the grass. Fish out in front for speckled sea trout. Not all drops will hold fish all the time, but right now the Redfish seem to be migrating from the Sounds up the river, following the baitfish. Once you locate a place like this, expect to have great catches. Try to keep only what you need for a meal, and release the rest for another day.

This past weekend I had some guys that wanted to keep the limit. We did that but did not wipe out the school. We got into what I think was an actual migration of reds. Once the tide was right, it was nonstop action. Even though the weather was rainy one day and very cold and windy the next, the Reds continued to move from the sound up river. The picture below was Fridays catch, 15 slot redfish and 4-speckled sea trout and 1 whiting.

Capt Judy Fishing report , Savannah 12-5-206.bmp

I had a father and 2 kids, and the kids out did the father. As usual, if you want to catch fish, please bring a child along. They always catch something. Disclaimer: This report is based on my years of inshore fishing. What I have written is what I believe, but maybe we just got lucky.

Captain Rick Reynolds is showing us those two K-9 teeth that a spotted sea trout sports. Believe me this is one fish that knows what to do with them. Known for being predatory killers the trout attacks, grabs to lock in its prey, and then positions it so as to swallow it. Boy, I got to tell you I am glad I wasn’t born a shrimp or a small fish!

Now here is a nice picture of a very good mess of just caught black sea bass. The fish that don’t have any color are the females and the ones with the light blue tint are the males. Please don’t feel bad for the females, which don’t have much color. The reason being is the black sea bass is born a female and later turns into a male!

Artificial Reefs

Bottom catching is great!

The offshore artificial reefs are still holding lots of all size black sea bass, triggerfish, flounder, black drum, sheepshead, blue fish, and etc. The bottom line is this…no matter what fishing is it’s still a whole lot of fun!

Artificial Reefs are holding some nice trophy red fish!

Please remember that these fish “no matter what size” are “catch and release only!”

Capt Judy Fishing report , Savannah 12-5-213.bmp

Yes this is a picture of a blue fin that was caught off the Georgia coast a few years ago!

Blue Fin Tuna Reminder!

Anytime now!

Although we have “NO” confirmed sightings of blue fin tuna in our area they have shown up in North Carolina coast. I just want to make sure that you are aware that they could make way to this area at any time. These fish usually show up on the South Carolina artificial reefs first. Here’s the list: Betsy Ross, Eagle’s Nest, Hilton Head Reef, and Edisto Reefs. The bottom line is where there is a food source is where they are going to show up. Do you know that a large blue fin requires about 40 to 60 pounds of fish a day to maintain its weight?

I have always said, “When the school blue fish show up the blue fins are right behind!” Guess what? The school blues have been here for about two weeks! Keep your eyes “Wide Open” and if you think that you see a fish the size of a Volkswagen with eyes in the shape of hubcaps then please make a report!

Welcome to amberjack-ville!

Keith Hagen is holding up a nice amberjack, which he caught while fishing in November with his son Alex and Will Johnson at the snapper banks.

The good news Keith and his son Alex comes fishing with me every year. I always look forward to spending the day with them! I hope to see them in 2011!

Trolling or live lining

While trolling or live lining the catching possibilities at this time are very good. Last week king mackerel, amberjack, dolphin, and black jacks were caught.

Seasons that are closed…

Can’t keep vermilion snapper (closed November-March)

Can’t keep genuine red snapper (closed 2010 with possible closure extensions)

Great picture sent by Johnnie Peters!

I should call this picture, “Floating dock still floating, but we really don’t know why!” Lets see dogs, children, ramp, and a ton of fish!

Gulf Stream Reports

My suggestion is especially at this time…if you get good weather be prepared to go…boats went last week and caught black fin tuna, dolphin, Wahoo, and released a sail fish. Here’s the best line ever, “You won’t now unless you go!”

Little Miss Judy’s Believe It or Not!

Capt Judy Fishing report , Savannah 12-5-219.bmp

The only mother I ever knew!

Ann Mayo Eden

1924-2010

Ann Mayo Eden, 86, of Chapel Hill, NC, Widow of Charles A. Eden, died Tuesday, November 30, 2010, at Duke Home Care & Hospice in Hillsborough, NC.

Born on October 2, 1924, in Cheraw, she was a daughter of the late Jesse and Annie Caskey Mayo. She was a member of Chapin Baptist Church

Surviving is her daughter Annell Brazzell of Chapel Hill, NC and a brother Tommy Mayo of Columbia, and a stepdaughter Captain Judy Helmey of Savannah, GA

When Annell ask me to speak at Ann’s funeral, I was honored! There is so many good things to say about Ann that I really didn’t know where to start. So I though I would do so in story form and share with you a couple of the many stories that I have….

Ann’s Biscuits!

I like to start out asking, “Have you ever had Ann’s biscuits? If you haven’t boy did you miss out on a treat.

When I would visit her she would always make me biscuits. We would eat them for breakfast and the leftovers were snacks for lunch. I would lather her homemade jelly all over it. My favorite was black berry! Most of the time there were no biscuits leftovers. Ann gave me her biscuit recipe and I tried it, but as you can only imagine they didn’t turn out like Ann’s. I would like to add that I have had Annell’s and they were pretty good! I can only hope that Annell will consider giving me a little coaching in the Ann’s biscuit-making department!

The only Mother I ever knew!

When my father, married Ann, Annell her daughter, and I became a family. Ann would be the only mother I ever knew and she was a good one too! Annell became my big sister. I guess you could say we got along well and most likely better if I had stayed out of her sock drawer. And then there were always these two things…I was younger and taller! As time went on there would be many a day that I would call on Annell to have someone to lean my head on!

Pink frilly removal dance preformed by Judy

I remember this one time when I was about 10 years old. Ann brought me this pink frilly dress from Punch and Judy’s. I am sure the first thing Ann saw was a big frown on my face. However, somehow she got me to try it on. Well, according to Ann I then dropped to the floor screaming while making all kinds of twirling moves while taking the frilly dress off in pieces. This was the day that we both knew that the only thing that I wanted to wear was uniform type clothing. To this day my signature colors is still blue and white!

Annell’s and Judy’s best Christmas ever, thanks to Ann!

There was this one Christmas where Annell and I got to circle what we wanted in the Levy’s Catalog. At the age of 10 I wanted everything so therefore I circled it all. Daddy said, I couldn’t have everything and that I could only spent $25.00 dollars. Annell and I still circled everything in the book that we wanted. And I remember on that particular Christmas Eve I couldn’t get to sleep because I was so excited. When I woke, I opened my bedroom door and I had never seen so many gifts in one room. Ann had prevailed! Annell and I made out like bandits in the night!

Charlie Eden, Ann’s soul’s mate!

As time went on Ann married Charlie Eden, which turned out to be her forever soul mate. When I visited Ann and Charlie at their home in South Carolina I got to meet some interesting neighbors for sure. The neighbors across the street were very good friends with Ann and Charlie. They had a small lake full of fish and lots of geese. Charlie told me one time that they shot some geese; de-feathered them, and cooked them up. All along we were all frowning on that one! However, everyone on the lane got to try goose pie, baked goose, fried goose, and goose stew!

The great tractor-riding event!

One time while Annell and I were visiting we took Charlie’s tractor, haphazardly drove into the neighbor’s yard destroying some of there freshly planted soon to be winter crop. Ann, while watching was dialing her neighbor’s house trying to apologize for what her two daughters were doing. We both laughed till we cried, now, as you know we didn’t do any of this on purpose. Ann said, “You two are going to get me kicked out of here.” But this didn’t last for long and as you all know Ann and Charlie become some of the best neighbors to have on the lane. When it came time to name the lane the neighborhood all agreed on “Black Berry Lane.” Ann and Charlie was known for their tasty assorted homemade wines, which they made in a storage shed in the yard with black berry being everyone’s favorite. And as you must already know that’s another story coming soon!

When Charlie passed Ann became the mayor of Black Berry Lane. All that knew her loved Ann. She was everyone’s “go too person” when they had problems, needed help, or just wanted someone to talk to! She was always the backbone of everything that she ever accomplished! And she will be missed by all of us that she touched especially me!
