With the waters back in the sound and the beaches starting to warm up some, the red drum bite is starting to pick up. Even though you can't keep any speckled trout right now, the speckled trout bite back in some of the creeks and deep water areas are picking up as well. # 17 MirrOlures in the electric chicken color have been producing some nice 2 to 3 lb specks. Headed offshore, the wahoo bite is still there. If the winds will clam down enough to let you get there, there have been decent wahoo catches from down around the Swansboro Hole area and there are still blackfin tuna mixed in with the wahoo. The North Carolina Marine Fisheries commission has made a new ruling of Speckled Trout. The recreational closure for speckled trout will stay in effect until June 15th, while allowing a 50 lb by-catch in the commercial fisheries or 10% of total catch up to 50 lbs. Trawling for stripers will continue until the remainder of the quota is caught up this season.
