Inshore:With warmer than usual temperatures the past couple weeks, inshore water temps have remained steady in the 60's and the fishing has been more than just steady! Our lowcountry waters are producing some of the best red fishing you will find anywhere, truly world-class. From rock piles, to docks, to shallow low tide flats, reds have been feeding aggressively all over. Live minnows, Gulp! baits, scented ZMAN plastics, DOA shrimp, you name it and they have been eating it. Trout are still readily available in very good numbers as well, fishing in 3-7ft of water where structure or shell points create a nice current rip. Again, DOA shrimp under a popping float is a near sure thing but the trout are still eating almost any soft plastic bait in the 3-4" size. Also hot lately for the trout has been Bomber's Ba-Donk-A-Donk SS series, which is a slow sinking twitchbait. Sheepshead are biting in force as well as they begin to feed hard inshore before a lot of the breeders head offshore for the winter months. Fiddlers crabs fished around old pilings or the jetties will be as sure a bet for convicts as anything right now. If case you have not caught on, if you are not fishing right now you are missing some of the best inshore action we will see all year long!
Offshore:Getting back from vacation this week I was pleasantly pleased to hear that numerous boats made it out on the big pond the past week with the wonderful weather we had. Capt Chris Chavis reported to me yesterday that the bottom fishing in 80-85ft of water was as good as it gets. Chris reported great catches of large triggerfish, big blackfish, red snapper (no, you still cannot keep one currently!) several grouper including some big 'ens that "rocked them up", as well as a smorgasborg of porgies. On the trolling side, we heard several reports of some very nive wahoo being caught, as well as a few white marlin and a handful of blackfin tuna. Best reports I heard came from 150-300ft on the wahoo and blackfin, and the white's coming from around 400-500ft.
