The 2010 Wahoo Challenge has come to an end and it was full of surprises this year. The weather forecast was not looking promising and so we took advantage of having our scheduled weather dates. Our weather dates were not all that favorable for fishing so we extended the fishing days by one more. We had a boat all the way from Bermuda, "Mattanza", take top prize, a Hospice patient by the name of JD Smith weigh in the second prize wahoo from the "Sensation" and a loyal participant, "Weldor's Ark", come in with the 3rd largest fish.

The weather was not what we hoped for but Saturday was such a gorgeous day and there were so many wahoo brought home that it seemed to make up for it. Everyone had a great time, met some new friends, made some memorable stories and raised money for charity!! In my eyes, that is a successful tournament!

Thank you again to all those that were a part of this year's tournament and I truly appreciate all of your hard work and dedication and especially everyone's very positive attitude!

Your Tournament Director,

Holly Fletcher

Tournament Wrap Up:

Congratulations to Capt Brooks Rans, angler Marco Lavecchia and the rest of the crew on the Mattanza for their big win. Mattanza took first place over all with a 63.3 lb wahoo, TWT and the Individual Aggregate categories for a total of $17,403.75 in prize money. They also get the bragging rights for being the boat that traveled the farthest to fish the tournament... Brooks brought the boat over from Bermuda to fish the Wahoo Challenge this year!

The second place wahoo weighed in at 57.3 and has its own story. JD Smith was the angler on board the Sensation, captained by Dale Britt, who weighed in the fish and is also a Hospice patient who gave a passionate speech on Saturday night to remind us all how precious life is.

Weldor's Ark, a boat that fishes with us every year, weighed in the third place wahoo at 52.5 angled by Pascual Jimenez. Elizabeth Stewart on the Sea Striker took home beautiful piece of jewelry by DP Jewelry for her 43.8 lb wahoo which won the Lady Angler division. Nathan Watson, also aboard the Sea Striker, was first in the Junior angler division with a 44.7 pound wahoo.

Despite the weather being a bit sketchy, everyone had fun, a ton of wahoo's were caught and we raised money for our charities: Take a Kid Fishing and Crystal Coast Hospice House. The Executive Board made some tough decisions this year but always kept in mind that they were trying to allow more folks to be able to fish and trying to raise as much money as possible for the charities.

Fishing Report from Morehead City

What are they catching?

Strong winds have been problematic for the fishing fleet but when they do get the chance to get out there they are catching Wahoo, Sailfish and Tuna. When they can't make it offshore they are inshore seeing plenty of drum, trout, spot and flounder.

Are you ready to get out there and fish? There are plenty of charter boats ready to take you on an offshore adventure... check out the charter boats listed on our website.
